  • On the verge of a breakthrough, need help!

Hello, Bards of Vana'diel! I need your help to test something I stumbled upon; it could be huge. A friend was helping me test the exact effects of the first-level elemental ninjutsu on elemental resistances (-30 resistance for 15 seconds, ALWAYS sticks), and we found that he'd get only -19 resistance on his 6DRK/3WAR. I assumed that his hidden resistance stat was 19, and the game wouldn't allow it to be negative. Then we tried it on his 10 DRG/5 WHM, and he'd get the full -30. After looking at the numbers for a while, I realized that for a level 6 character, B and C-ranked skills cap at 19, and for a level 10 character, B skills cap at 31, with C skills capping at 30. Later, I got another friend to help. We tried again on a few more jobs. This is what we found:

    Taggerung 2BLM/1WHM (9 INT, 8 MND)
    -7 resistance

    Ultimage 6DRK/3WAR (11 INT, 8 MND)
    -19 Resistance

    Taggerung 8SMN/4WHM (13 INT, 15 MND)
    -24 Resistance

    Taggerung 9NIN/4WAR (11 INT, 9 MND)
    -27 Resistance

Just as I thought, those numbers match the cap for C-ranked skills perfectly. I believe I have stumbled upon the secret of elemental resistance - my theory is that this is the number that is checked against Elemental/Enfeebling/Dark/Divine/Singing/etc. magic skills to determine the probabilities of a resist. It makes sense - if you look at the skill caps, you'll notice most jobs have C-ranked evasion, with most melees having an A-ranked weapon skill, just like many mages/pseudo-mages have A-ranked offensive magic skills. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that each point in a given magic skill gives 1 Magic Accuracy, just like each point of your weapon skill gives 1 Accuracy. If all this holds true, even a meager ammount of elemental resistance (say, +5) can have a significant impact on resist rates, as it's comparable to "Magic Evasion" and is the opposite of Magic Accuracy.

Anyways, back to the point. The fact is, there's only two jobs that can feasably reduce enemy's elemental resistances. Unfortunately, since Ninjutsu will only reduce resistance by 30 on its own, I can't "reveal" any character level 10 or higher's resistance with it alone. I only know one BRD and I barely see him, and when I do he's busy. This is where you all come in - if you could reserve uncapped Dioramas (either Brenner or Ballista is fine) with a friend, Threnodies could be used in conjunction with Ninjutsu to lower resistances even more and continue to gather data on the hidden resistance stat for low level characters. I'm mainly interested in testing this against characters with jobs at 10 or higher. How high the test subject can be will be determined by how powerful Threnodies are, but for now it's best to stick to low-teen levels.

To do this, however, you'd have to find out how powerful Threnodies are, and wether they have a fixed -resistance or if they increase in potency with your musical skills. You could easily test their potency simply by casting them on a mid-level (30+ should be high enough) character and asking him/her to check how much -resistance he got. Once you know that, it's merely a matter of telling your test subject(s) to change to teen-levelled jobs, then using a Threnody and Ninjutsu that lower resistance to the same element. If the person gets less -resistance than the sum of the Threnody's effect and 30 (since Ninjutsu always gives -30) then that's the character's hidden resistance value. If the person simply gets the sum of the Threnody's effect and 30, then his resistance was too high to reveal.

When performing this, please take note of: your BRD level and Singing/Instrument skill levels (since I don't know if Threnodies have fixed or variable potencies); the full -Resistance Threnodies give your test subjects; The job and level of the test subjects, and their INT and MND just to be safe; the -resistance the test subject got from both the Threnody and the Ninjutsu. If your NIN sub isn't high enough, get a 15+ NIN to come with you and make sure he's on your team. If testing could be done on more than one element (to confirm that all elemental resistances are equal among players) that would be ideal; in fact, I'm wondering if jobs have higher resistances towards some elements (for example, THFs being strong to Wind or Ice, or WARs being strong to Fire) although I doubt it. The more numbers we can get, the better. Any and all contributions are most welcome.

By the way, does anyone know exactly how long an unresisted Threnody lasts?

Thanks in advance. I look forward to seeing the results of this ^^

Bump. Did some more testing. Looks like my theory was right. I recruited the help of a BRD named Destinee, along with my girlfriend Suzanne to cast Ice Threnody + Huton: Ichi on me.

    Destinee BRD28/WHM14
Ice Threnody no instrument: -50 resistance
Ice Threnody w/ Cornette (no boost): -50 resistance
Ice Threnody w/ Piccolo (Threnody +1): -55 resistance

    Armando DRG11/WHM5
    -33 Resistance w/ Ice Threnody

    Armando BST15/WHM7
    -44 Resistance w/ Ice Threnody

    Armando BLM20/WHM10
-58 Resistance w/ Ice Threnody + Huton: Ichi

    Armando WHM22/BLM11
-63 Resistance w/ Ice Threnody + Huton: Ichi

All data seems to point to the fact that all PC characters have a hidden resistance stat whose value is equivalent to the cap for a C-rank skill. It was also interesting that neither BLM nor WHM had higher Resistance stat than the other jobs.

Having this knowledge, -/+ Resistance modifiers suddenly seem very powerful. Threnodies and Ninjutsu can lower enemy's resistance probabilities to near-zero when used in conjunction, especially in the low levels. Stacking +20 resistance in equipment should provide a noticeable increase in resist rates against a similarly-levelled caster. Assuming that this stat is checked against magic skill (which seems to be the logical assumption, given that magic skill and resist stat both determine nothing but the probabilities of resisting a spell,) if a mage notices a large improvement from raising his magic skill by 10, so too should the target notice a similar or equal improvement by increasing his resistance to that spell's element by 10.

Also, Ancient Magic has the exact same effect as Ninjutsu.

      Great research!

Do Ancient Magic and Ninjutsu stack, or overwrite one another? Does the debuff effect from Ancient Magic also last for 15 seconds?
