Ok some ppl are prob gonna flame me for this.....But as a bard do you have to use an instrament or can you sing? Stupid question yes I know ^_^;

Having an instrument equipped also allows you to sing more than 1 song (i'm pretty sure anyways). Also, string instruments have a wider radius of effect.ZM Complete

Correct, you cannot have two song effects active on a person unless you use an instrument.

You also use two skills when playing with an instrument (singing + wind or singing + string), but only one skill when singing (not surprisingly, just plain singing skill).
That means that aside from range issues and getting to maintain two buffs rather than one and instrument-specific song boost ... your songs are simply and plainly more powerful with an instrument because you have effectively twice the skill being pumped into them.Averter of the Apocalypse~

Instruments account for 3/4 the power of a brd. Instruments allow for more than one song to be cast on each pt member, and more than double song power and accuracy in some cases. Thats why brd as a sub is so gimpy, your playing with a brd half your lvl already, and you remove instrument power to make it practically useless, aside from one song.Comment
