I beat Maat two days ago, it was my 2nd try.
Big thanks to the people on this forum for the advice :>

    Hume LV69 BRD
    202 Sword skill
    194 Evasion
    Capped Singing & Wind Skill

    Items:
    Steamed Crab
    Vile Elixer
    Icarus Wing
    20 X-Potions (used 9)
    6 Sleeping Potions
    6 Persikos au Lait

    Equipment:
    Cermet Sword +1
    Green Baret
    Northern Jerkin
    Opo Opo Necklace
    AF Hands & Feet
    Amemit Mantle
    Life Belt
    2x Phalanx Ring
    2x Melody Earring

    Instruments:
    Hamelin Flute for Requiem
    Horn +1 for Elegy

    - I used the sleeping potions and ate the Ica Wing.
    - Ate the Crab.
    - Soul Voice > 2x Paeon.
    - Persokos au Lait.
    - Open fight with 1 hit, then immediately Spirits Within.
    - Elegy & Requiem.

And then basically watch what Maat is doing, using your X-Potions and Persikos when Maat uses Finale on you. I did 2x Paeon and Requiem before SV ran out.
Finished him off with a WS.

( aug. 27 : corrected Evasion and added the Elegy instrument name )

      Re: Maat

I tried him for my first time last night my approach is tons of +evasion but my main mistake was sleeping to 300tp i was mid fight with him when my time ran out was super gay im lvl 67 bard and im staying sub 70 so he doesnt have asuran fists when i fight him.
My gear gives me +40 evasion and +10 evasion skill then i eat jack o'lantern for another 10 evasion and 10 acc im going to try and get another test today and just sleep to 100tp and double paeon this time instead of double mambo cause he wasnt hitting me much either when mambo was down so i think paeons will help recovery process saving me from wasting damage time from using pots one of the things that pissed me off the most was that he gets to run around massively and his songs still take effect none of that spell interuption i guess for him....

        Re: Maat

but sword is the way to beat him faster.. with spirit within
        Meh, not really.

Spirits Within's damage isn't anything to write home about unless you use it at 300% with full HP. If you try to use the Opo-Opo Necklace and sleep to 300% TP before engaging, you will most likely lose due to time. Holding off on your WS until you build it up to 300% TP isn't very practical, either, since you most likely won't have full HP by the time you get it.

Now, I'm not knocking the use of a sword...you can most certainly beat Maat with a sword...it's just that there's really no way to use its Spirits Within WS to its fullest effect in this fight.

          Re: Maat

This is how I won, step by step guide:
          1) Sleep to 275% (yes you read that right)
          2) Use Memento Muffler for VIT+8 enchantment
          3) Use Tavnazian Taco
          4) Use Soul Voice
          5) Sing Paeon 4 & 5
          6) Use Pear au Lait
          7) Pull Maat with Finale
          8) Spirits Within his ass for 400-500 DMG
          9) Sing Requiem and Elegy
          10) Try to stay alive while hitting him with your sword, drink potions when necessary, build 100% TP again
          11) Spirits Within if your hp is ok. Otherwise Burning/Fast Blade.
          12) If he isn't dead by now, Icarus Wing and WS him for a 3rd time
          13) Win.

I cannot stress enough how important Paeons and Requiem are here. I don't understand why the OP wastes his Soul Voice on Minne. With Soul Voice, Paeons will heal you for 36 hp/tick if you have a paeon+2 instrument, which will help you a lot more than Minne ever will.
And after your first Spirits Within, Requiem is your primary source of damage - with Soul Voice up it does around 13dmg/tick, which is a lot. Believe me, you will see his health bar decrease noticeably.

As for equipment, forget about atk/acc and get as much def/vit as possible. As I said, the most damage comes from requiem. Just make sure you have your Sword leveled to 175 for Spirits Within, as this WS is the key to victory. Rune Blade is the best sword you can get for this because it has the highest possible DMG.

You wrote a pretty good guide with much helpful information.

Just a couple of points I disagree with...

You're actually the very first person I've heard who was able to sleep your TP that high and not get timed-out.

No offense, but you were extremely lucky that you didn't run out of time. I'd highly recommend that other Bards preparing for this fight not do this. Just buff yourself up and engage Maat. Sleep to 100% if you must, but not 300% (or close to it).

No offense again, but Spirits Within is definitely not the key to this fight. I did just fine with my Terra's Staff using Full Swing. Others have employed the use of a Stun Knife with Cyclone being the WS of choice.

And it helps out a lot if you can actually cap out your weapon skill, and not just stop at the skill level that you can use a WS.

              Re: Maat

Here's how I did it even though I had some serious equipment help from a NIN friend.

Scorpion Harness, Evasion Torque, and an Emperor's Hairpin. As for food I used Boiled Crab and I had 3 high potions ready to go. Got into the BC and 2hred cast double Paeon ran up to Maat, cast Elegy and Foe Requiem then right after he cast his first song I Finaled it. Continued to beat on him until the recast for Elegy, Requiem, and Finale came back up; I cast all of the songs again before the 2hr wore off. The instant I had 100 tp I used all my potions and used one Spirits Within for about 165, right afterward I used a Regain Feather(full HP/MP/TP) and almost did another Spirits Within but he gave up before I had the chance.

I didn't sleep tp gain, I didn't do anything that you wouldn't normally do while soloing melee on BRD.

If you have any other questions as to what equipment I had I'll answer them but I really feel that it's not important. If you plan to ask how to get a Regain Feather I'm not telling you, it's hard to do and I don't feel like giving up the secret, besides I didn't even get to use the 300tp from the feather so in the end I didn't need it.

Good Luck to all of you.

                Re: Maat

If it helps, here's what I did upon entering:

                * Used an Icarus Wing to gain 100% TP.
                * Used Sleeping Potions and an Opo-Opo Necklace to raise 200% TP.
                * Used Soul Voice, followed by Paeon V and Paeon IV, coupled with an Ebony Harp +1.
                * Changed to the proper equipment, and ran in.
                * With Soul Voice still on, I hit Maat with Elegy and Requiem.
                * Pulled out my blade, and hacked away, using Hi-Potions when needed.
                * Eventually I had 300% TP. I healed myself up to full, and used Spirits Within. Maat's health dropped from about 7/10 to 1/3.
                * It was all downhill from there. A few more swings and it was all over.

Note: You MUST keep your health at least in the white during this. If you keep it somewhat low, you never know when Maat can WS and kill you.

My equipment, if I remember correctly, was:

                Weapon: Cermet Sword
                Head: Carapace Helmet
                Body: Carapace Breastplate
                Hands: Carapace Gauntlets
                Legs: Choral Cannions
                Feet: Tiger Ledelsens
                Ears: Spike Earrings
                Rings: Ametrine Rings
                Belt: Gleeman's Belt

I used Sole Sushi for food.

                Best of luck!

                  Re: Maat

My Maat fight went as follows:

                  Weapon: Cermet Sword +1
                  Shield: Elegant Shield
Instrument: Macro'd to songs(no ebony harp at the time)
                  Earrings: Melody x 2
                  Rings: Loyalty +1 x 2
                  Back: Jester's Cape
                  Waist: Gleeman's Belt
                  Neck: Wind Torque
                  Head: AF
                  Body: AF
                  Hands: AF
                  Feet: AF
                  Legs: AF

                  Food: Tav. Taco
                  Items: 1 Icarus Wing / Several Hi-Potions / 1 Au-lait(pamana I think)

I went in fully clothed, used Au-lait, SV, Peaon III & Peaon IV (pre-peaon v days), and then I ran into the circle. From this point it went like this.
                  Finale / Elegy / Requiem
At this point I started to spam Finale, using Hi-pots when needed, and Fast Blade @ 100% TP. I recast Peaons, Elegy, and Requiem before SV wore, and then continued to Finale as much as possible. This kept Maat occupied with trying to get his buffs up. If he finaled me, I would recast when he was recasting to ensure I wouldn't get killed while singing. Soon enough he gave up.

                    Re: Maat

I beat Maat at 69 bard on my first try, my sword skill was 202 and skilled it up on Maat to 203 while fighting.

I used a complete defense setup, my gear as follows:
                    Main: Cermet Sword
Head: Blink Band then switched to Carapace Helm
Neck: Opo Opo Necklace then switched to Bird Whistle
                    Ear1: Melody Earring
                    Ear2: Melody Earring
                    Body: Carapace Breastplate
                    Hands: Carapace Gauntlets
                    Ring1: Phalanx Ring
                    Ring2: Phalanx Ring
                    Back: Amemit Mantle
                    Waist: Gleeman's Belt
                    Legs: Choral Cannions
                    Feet: Choral Slippers

Slept to 100 TP with Opo Opo necklace
Used Tavnazian Taco for extra Def.
Used my Blink Band then switched to Carapace Helm.
                    Drank a Pamama au Lait.
                    Soul Voiced
                    Double Paeoned
Went up to the arena and Elegy and Requiemed Maat
Here I got a feel for how he was hitting, then I used my first Spirits Within
Popped my Hi-pots after he hit me with his weaponskill (dragon kick)
Resung my double Paeon, and Elegy and Requim on Maat before my Soul Voice ran out
Used Icarus Wing and hit another Spirits Within

I even forgot to add a macro prior to the battle for Finale so I typed that up while I was fighting (and I even mispelled it so I had to retype it again). >_> somehow, I still beat Maat on my first try.
