Hmm i've spoken to two bards who both did this and they didn't run out of time=X i think it takes you about 2-3 mins into it, though i havn't tried it myself.

if you sleep to 300%tp you will run out of time.

Sleep to 200%tp use wing for 300%tp, Spirits Within, and then keep hacking away.

Seems there is no trick or sure win stragedy for bards, it takes a little luck.

For me it was all for nothing as I quit the game at 72, RL >>> FFXI at least for me, just took me a while to become unhooked
        Outaru
        used to be:
        Rank 9.5
        72 BRD, 36 WHM, 13 BLM, 5 SUM, etc.
        Full RSE Set <--sold
Complete AF set. <-- what a pain

I talked to someone who said they did dual mambo on themselves, and Maat missed like crazy and only did 1 WS near the end of the fight. Did anyone else try this?

It seems to makes sense, I can't image how much evasion Soul Voiced mambo would give you.

Just beat up the old man, here's what i had if it helps anyone:

            head: green beret (sexy oO)
            body: assault jerkin
            main: wing sword
            hands: battle gloves
            rings: phalanx rings
            legs: AF
            feet: AF
earrings: Coral & lvl70 Minstrel Earring
            back: beak mantle +1
            waist: life belt

Requiem did almost all the damage. I went in with ~180 sword skill, and I think I whiffed at least half the time, probably more.

Did the sleeping potion thing at the beginning. Ate fish kabob, selb milk, 2 houred, double paeon on me. Ran up to Maat, did elegy, requiem, and finale. Recasted reqium, and both paeons after about 2 mins before soul voice wore. The only other time I finaled was when he played victory march on himself.

When I got my tp got to 200% I popped an icarus wing, pounded 2 hi-potions to get full HP, and did a 300% spirits within for around 500 dmg.

I think I used 10 hi-potions total, and 3 selbina milks. The lowest my HP ever got was around 750.

He did one inch punch and howling fist and I think that was it. The effect of elegy is pretty crazy...I could usually do 2 hi-potions between attacks if I had to.

So thanks to everyone who posted this basic strategy, it worked pretty flawlessly.

Finally got him on 3rd try by 9:15 min. ^^)v

As a Taru with 840 hp, the Paeon plan worked well (my 1st fight was Minne plan, no go. 2nd fight was trying Lullaby, he resisted like mad ; ; )

Items are similar to previous posters; carapaces, cermet sword +1 (207 skills), palanx rings, minstrel earring, amemet mantle, life belt. 10/27 Hi-potion used I bought Vile Elixir +1 (50k) just in case and didn't use it.

Battle log is here for reference. Bad WS macro noticed

Maat : Let's see... How about we duel it out at the Qu'Bia Arena? You know what to do with the bard's testimony when you get there, right?
Maat : Now if you show me that bard's testimony, I'll even teleport you to the battlefield. Boy, are we going to have some fun!
Maat : That wasn't so hard now, was it?
Maat : I bet you're wondering why I keep having you travel around the globe, collecting all these rare and obscure items for me.
Maat : Heh heh heh. I know what you're thinking. You're sick and tired of playing fetch for old Maat. You want a chance to show me what you're really made of.
Maat : Well, now that you mention it, I think I'd be delighted to test your might with my own hands.
Maat : I may look old, but I still have a lot of spunk in me. I can take anything and everything you've got.
Maat : What do you say? You'll get your chance to get back at me for all the trouble I've put you through, and I'll get some good exercise.
Maat : Heh heh heh! That's the spirit! Now take that bard's testimony to the burning circle and throw it in. I'll be waiting for you inside.
                === Area: Qu'Bia Arena ===
                Your bard's testimony tears!

After that he was under half health. (Realized halfway through that i didn't used food and used that) Used cyclone again when I had TP and that was it.

Only used 4 hi-potions and never got below 500 hp of 700-800 i think it was. Total time was 5 min 26 secs.

EDIT: Used Ebony Harp +1, Hamelin Flute and Horn +1.

Grats on your Maat victory, but ...

                      Level: 39/19

I think you need to update your FFXIO profile a wee bit.

I posted this on VN boards, but may as well repost here to get as much advice as possible, altho this thread has given me quite a bit of insight already.

                        Hi folks.

Can anyone give me some feedback on fighting Maat, ie tactics, food, what to wear etc? After speaking to a couple of Bards in the game, I've been told I need a lot of high defense by wearing Carapace, eating boiled crab, singing double Minne, etc. But is it really all about defense? Wouldn't March and Madrigal be better for more accurate and faster hitting?

More than anything I'm worried I'll run out of time. I hit like a sissy at the moment and realise I need to raise dagger to over 220 (I'm 174 at the moment) and it takes me ages to get TP. I'm thinking I might try a skillchain on him - Cyclone - eat icarus wing - another Cyclone - would that work?

                        Here's my current armour setup:

                        Justacorps +1
                        Corsette +1
                        Jesters Cape +1
                        Moon ring x 2
                        Melody earring x 2
                        AF boots
                        AF gloves
                        Silk Pants
Gold Hairpin (will probably wear AF hat for fight tho)
                        Bird Necklace
                        Stun Dagger
                        Elegant Shield

I also have Ramuh's staff and Earth staff - would it be worth raising staff skill instead?

Thanks for any input anyone can give me!

Ok, just beat him today myself, so I thought I'd share my experience.

                            Level 70
                            Capped music skills
209 Dagger (also 200 Sword, but I didn't use that)
                            190-some Evasion
                            50-some Parry
                            Food: Boiled Crab

                            Main: Stun Knife
                            Sub: nothing
Range: Ebony Harp +1, Hamelin Flute, Horn +1, Mary's Horn (saw one resist and didn't waste time on it further)
                            Ammo: nothing
                            Head: Carapace
Neck: Opo-Opo Necklace > Wind Torque
                            Earring1: Melody +1
                            Earring2: Minstrel's
                            Body: Carapace
                            Hands: Carapace
                            Ring1: Moon
                            Ring2: Minstrel's
                            Back: Jester's +1
                            Waist: Life Belt
                            Legs: AF
                            Feet: AF

                            Items:
                            1x Vile Elixir (not used)
                            20x Hi-Potion (13 not used)
                            4x Sleeping Potion
                            1x Icarus Wing
12x Selbina Milk (10 not used)

As you can see, I was quite cheap when it came to new equipment. I mostly just wore my levelling stuff (AF has surprisingly good defense btw).

As for the battle, it was the usual strategy (sleep up for TP, *EAT DEFENSE FOOD*, SV, buff buff buff, debuff him to start the fight, WS Icarus Wing WS, stay alive, recast buffs/debuffs before SV runs out, keep finale'ing him, stay alive, and WS when you get TP) ...

Basically he was missing, a lot, and he didn't choose to use a really nasty WS (most he did was ~300). He also, in my favor, spent a lot of time buffing himself. I had been under the impression that Maat would always Finale away the milk, but that wasn't the case. He never Finale'd the milk and always Finale'd a paeon. My advice:

                            - Spend as little time buffing *in battle* as possible.
                            - Only use Finale if Maat's buff is dangerous (etudes and ballads can be ignored, stuff which makes him hurt you more or be harder to hurt - such as the 5 M's - should be removed).
                            - Bring plenty of Hi-Potions, and macro them. Hell, macro *everything* you will be doing in this battle. Paeons, Elegy, Requiem, Finale, Milk, Potions, WS, Icarus Wing.
                            - Be level 70. I tried this at 67 with pretty much the same strategy and he *murdered* me. It didn't help that I'd completely forgotten to eat my crab that time, of course.
                            - Know when Soul Voice will run out, and be sure you rebuff and redebuff before it does.
                            - Be lucky. The more time he spends buffing, the less time he spends hitting you, not only doing damage but getting TP for WS. Also, he can do weak WS or strong WS and you have to be lucky enough for it to be weak.
                            - Requiem is your main damage, and Elegy is your main tool of survival. Landing these at the beginning is more important than removing Maat's buffs or starting to smack him.
                            - The battle is *not* about your physical damage. That helps significantly but your top priority is to have Requiem ticking away while you stay alive. Having said that, if you contribute no physical damage I think you'll have a much harder time, so ...
                            - Any weapon type will do (though I'm still leery of club), just have 200+ skill in it (the more the better) and know which WS or WS's will work best. And have a good weapon.
                            - The better your evasion skills (and especially if you have evasion+ equipment), the more he'll miss. Less damage for you and less TP for him = teh win. I seriously think evasion gear and double mambo might actually be quite a viable strategy.

I've got a bard buddy that fought him. Took him 4 tries, I believe. Got owned on #1, computer crashed on #2, disconnected mid-fight in #3, and won on #4. Yeesh. For what its worth, he used dagger and cyclone.
                              You know I'm right.
