I finally got to 70 over the holiday weekend and decided to try Maat on Monday since there is no exp loss. Spent 200k in gear and foods, many of the common things mentioned in various posts. I was using a sword, I slept to 100 tp used an icarus wing to get 200 tp then did the usual Soul Voice double minne, etc.. Then I attacked Maat and was looking to build that 100 tp to get to 300 so I could use Spirits Within, huge mistake by the time I got to 300 tp I was halfway dead so my Spirts Within did like 130 dmg, I only had 12 poitions so I died. Althought it was my first time I was mad I lost I did so much up front research.

I then decided to ask a few 71-75 bards, they said double minne was wrong to use double paeon instead, some melee told me to sleep to 300%tp, another huge mistake as I ran out of time. /cry

I am not a quitter so I mamanged to muster up some friends to help me get yet another testimony. This time I slept 100 tp used Icarus wing 200 tp and double paeon. Used Spirts Within right at start for like 200 dmg, and all was good till he hit me with Asuran Fists I think it was dropped my HP to 205 used a vile exilir <-- very important to have to get my life back to 50% and started spamming high poitions when he hit me with another WS and dropped me down to 300 hp at this point it has been at least 7 mins and maat has 1/3 HP left so I am like omfg I am going to lose again, then the fight suddenly stopped the old fool gave up

I have read various Maat posts and now I know how all of you felt, was a horrible experience. Lost so much cash in food. I do not think there is any one way to beat Maat I think there is a lot of luck involved.

I feel your pain, buddy. When I defeated Maat on my second try, I felt about 2 seconds of joy...right before I reflected upon how much gil I had wasted just to beat him. Then all I felt was pissed.

The way I see this is that youre taking too much damage or not recovering enough. Are you using food? All I had to do is equip Scorpion armor, Cermet Sword, Minstrel Earring and around 18 potions (I only used 8 I think) and the fight was very easy. I didn't even try the TP trick. Just before fighting, I did Soul Voice and casted Paeon 4 + 3, then I went into the arena, cast Elegy + Requiem and pwned him. I only used the potion when he was at 50% HP I think. Make sure you use Requiem and dont sing too much. Recast Paeon, Requiem and Elegy just before Soul Voice end.

It might be bad luck because he used Asuran Fist on you too.. =(

It took me 4 tries to finally defeat Maat. The third time I was so close I died to Asuran Fists.

Fourth time I found incredibly easy.

I went the SV Paeonx2 way, Boiled Crab, Sleeping Potions and Icarus Wing. Kept poking away, using Cyclone now and then and the fight was pretty quick.

I'm glad its all over now

I personally didn't find Maat difficult at all.

I went into the fight with wing sword, AF hat, spike necklace, minstrel's earring, melody earring +1, assault jerkin, light gauntlets, minstrel's ring, courage ring, amemit mantle, life belt, AF legs, and AF feet. Also, I had taken the time to cap my sword skill, and evasion was I believe 1 point from cap at the time. Parry was near 100.

Once I entered the BC, I immediately ate my icarus wing, then began sleeping until I had 300% TP (almost 5mins), then rushed to the front of the hall, ate my steamed crab, persikos au'lait, used soul voice, double paeon with an ebony harp +1, and then got into cast range of Maat. My first song was finale, and as he came into range I used spirits within immediately for around 475 dmg (mithra brd, no sub, I believe full HP was 960~). Next I used elegy (horn +1, very important), followed by requiem (hamelin flute, left equipped for +3 evade) and one more finale to remove his final buff, which turned out to be minuet so was very glad to have done this. At this point Maat was already at about 75% HP, while I was still near full HP even after his initial 80ish damage hit.

I believe luck plays in at this point because even though Maat only managed one weapon skill against me, had it been Asuran Fists it'd have hurt. Fortunately for me he only used one-inch punch, which did 87dmg, which was about Maat's average per hit. Just before he popped me with his WS, he had finale'd one of my paeon's, so since soul voice had about 45secs left at this point and I had my -25% spellcast from being latent and using minstrel's ring, I refreshed both paeons, and continued to fight. He never really buffed himself, and only cast elegy and requiem on me, which with 2hr paeons and the persikos au'lait my regen per tick was still about 20 or more. By the time Maat gave up, I had about 450ish HP left, and not once throughout the fight did I use a potion (I didn't even take potions with me). As for parrying and evading Maat, he missed me once, and I parried him once.

Anyway, if you go in prepared I really don't think he's too difficult, so don't be afraid. I would suggest spending the time to cap sword skill, and if you can afford one, or have a friend to borrow it from, use a wing sword. The wind damage proc goes off quite often for me while solo'ing, and if I remember correctly it hit Maat several times as well. I would suggest carrying an emergency potion or two should you get unfortunate like some and get blasted by asuran fists, but for me that wasn't a problem.

Best of luck to those of you who've still yet to pass Maat

I think the most important thing for Maat is the requiem song. I lost twice and went in the third time casting requiem soul voice first, and that made all the difference, I beat it in 5 minutes 13 seconds at lvl 69. Also, you have to be very efficient with your songs, you can't just sing whenever the song is up, sing requiem with soulvoice, then elegy, then dispel or whatever, then paeon, then hi potion, then paeon, then you have to use your judgement as to when your soul voice is about to run out so you can paeon, requiem, and elegy again. Before your soul voice songs run out on him, he should be dead. I beat him with 155 sword skill easily and I used about 10 hi potions.

So what I'm wondering about is: Is there a "secret" way to beat Maat as a Bard?

Supposedly, WHMs have to cure 4000-4500 HP of damage on themselves, and cast a few other spells successfully to get Maat to give up.

I've heard that other jobs (seen something on Mysterytour to that effect) have these "secret" ways to induce Maat to give up.

Or will it all be about getting high price/HNM dropped armour, steamed crabs and spamming hi-potions for the win?

200 sounds low for spirits within, my cyclone hit alot harder.

don't forget the selbina milk trick, if you use that whenever he finales he'll just finale the milk regen instead of anything more important.

i think the most importantt part is to make sure you use +2requiem and +2elegy instrument.

No. Bards must beat Maat into submission; there is no alternate method for us to defeat him, strangely enough.

My Spirits Within at 300%TP with full health does about 520DMG. However, those are the two factors Spirits depends on - TP and health. And since you get beat on, you'll likely not have full health, which is the reason it'll turn out weaker.

i've been unlucky. dying to asuran fist both time.

2nd death was due to his back to back WS! he did "shoulder tackle then right after that.. asuran fist..
