  • Can Elegy be overwritten?

Ok - So I just turned 59 last night, and was very happy to be able to start using Carnage Elegy. My last 3 levels have all been with a NIN tank, and the song has gotten such rave reviews on these boards that I was really expecting it to make a nice difference.

However, I noticed that without the song wearing off, I was able to successfully recast it around 24 seconds later. That leads me to believe that something is forcing the effect to be overwritten ... but I've never come across this subject on the boards before.

Because of the NIN tank, I started casting Elegy while the pull was still on the way back (mob rarely turned to me, and I had blink up anyways just in case). As a sidenote if you do this, stand right next to the 1st provoker so that you don't screw with the thief's positioning.

So, ballad is already up on the mages, and I land an Elegy. After the 2x Madgrial, I could recast Elegy again and have it successfully land. At first I thought it might be my other bard debuffs, but I quickly eliminated using them to test this. Supposedly Elegy stacks with slow.

Does the order in which they are cast matter? Will they only stack if slow is cast first? Can some other WHM/BLM/NIN debuff overwrite the Elegy effect (like bio overwrites Dia?). Could there be a glitch (or programmed exception) with Carnage Elegy where you can reland the song without it wearing off first (other bard debuffs will show a "resisted" message if it hasn't worn off yet)?

I'd be willing to do some more testing myself, but at this point I'm not sure what to do or where to try it. I really want to get this right, since Elegy is so critical to the NIN tank. I shudder to think it's been contantly overwritten with some other less important spell.

I know with Battlefield Elegy (still got a few levels till Carnage), I can't ever overwrite it when I've recently placed it, but when it's nearing the end of its duration and will wear off soon, I can easily overwrite it (and if I don't, I can observe it wearing off indicating it didn't just get replaced by something else).

Same goes for my threnodies. I can overwrite one threnody with another threnody just fine (assuming the monster doesn't resist in the first place), but I have a hard time overwriting a threnody with itself unless it's been on there a long time. Nevertheless, I *can* overwrite a threnody with itself, just not immediately.

Same goes for requiem, except I can't overwrite a strong requiem with a weak requiem at all.

All this is just observation on my part, though. When fighting VT-IT you don't really have time to gather statistics.

      Here is what I noticed.

Eventhough I'm still 10K from Carnage, but with battlefield, I've always been able to cast it before it wares off. As matter of fact, my Nin Tank demands me to do it. XD

Unless the mob resists, I think we can always recharge our songs before it wares off.

        No, Elegy cannot be overwritten.

What you are doing is just "refreshing" Elegy by re-applying it. You don't need to wait for it to wear off before recasting.

Battlefield Elegy can be overwritten by Carnage Elegy, but that's it. Once you sing a Carnage Elegy, Battlefield Elegy will have "No Effect" and singing Carnage Elegy again will simply refresh the duration.

Thanks for the info. My past levels since I wrote this post (hrm... 6-7 maybe?) line up with the info you all have given here.
