This is a question my friend has..I was thinking of becoming a bard later on once my WHM hits level 30, and then subbing WHM. Is this a good combo? How far should I level WHM first? What kind of weapons should I use as a bard, and is it hard to level up solo? How often are bards accepted to parties on an average basis?

Having just tried out bard, I'd love to at least give you my insights on your first few levels.

1)Buy Meatmithkabobs. They simply make soloing at low levels ridiculously easy. I was getting around 2k/hr up until around l9 where mobs toughened up. Even then I got 1500/hr without much trouble.

2)Use a sword. The damage is much better than using dagger.

3)Make sure your songs are always up. I sang minne and minuet before every 1-2 fights, and I just ripped my way through beginner areas.

4)Sub whm. The cures will allow you to kill mobs that much longer. With paeon I barely rested at all until 9 or so.

5)Around level 11 it's probably time to get a party. In tahrongi, even with food and songs, it was just too hard. The risks aren't worth it. After 3 deaths in somewhat rapid succession, I went to valkurm and easily got a party and several more levels in a few hours.


I'll let a real bard comment on levels after that, but those are my insights on the first few levels as a bard after enjoying myself immensely this weekend.

ok Ill give him all the info he needs ^_^ brd/whm is the best going combo but brd/rdm is also a good combo if u just cannot stand leveling whm.. now subjobs are outa the way.. Party's love bards i speak no japanese but i get invited to jpn parties all the time.. If someone doesnt like brd in there pt they are crazy.. anyhow bard is loads of fun i never have a dull moment and as far as how far should u lvl whm beforehand.. i took my whm to lvl 36 before i started my brd just so i wouldnt have to go back to the boring whm job that is.. lol anyhow if your friend has any questions tell him to message me

You do realize that you need a level 37 sub for a level 75 character, not a level 36 sub. Granted, it won't be a *huge* difference (negligible stat/skill difference, and missing Shell(ra) II), but all the same, if you can stomach the 40K/level in the 70's you can easily stomach one more level of WHM back in the 30's when it's only like 6K or something.

My general recommendation on levelling:

BLM to 18
WHM/BLM to 37
(or)
WHM to 18
BLM/WHM to 18
WHM/BLM to 37
(either way)
BRD/WHM to 75

Though I took BLM to 21 and WHM to 42 so I could have a full set of teleports if needed (and the BLM was so I wouldn't have an underlevelled sub).

Soloing a bard, either sub levelled WAR for smacking things around or sub levelled WHM so you can heal yourself (even though it's not for much). Only solo to 11, at which point you get madrigal and can be of notable use to parties.

Soloing isn't too hard, just maintain your buffs on yourself at all times, and make use of damage over time (Dia, Requiem, and if using a dagger, Poison from the first WS ... though sword will get you more damage). I was soloing even-tough worms in La Theine to get from 9 to 11, and though I occasionally died (more often than not from a gob add), it was still quite manageable.

Most annoying thing at low levels is that your songs are sold all over the place. Don't buy from the AH since the markup on low level songs is probably at least 200%. Instead, find a list of song locations and run around the world buying them from NPCs ten levels in advance (they're all dirt cheap).

yea about me getting to 36 that was a lie.. i got to 37 and delvl'd helping some friends out.. My LS is gonna do some Eco-warrior quests and that will get my lvl back

Well if you plan on being in a lot of parties without WHM, having 38 for Teleport-Altep might be worth it. Just one extra lvl after you max the sub.

Tele-Vahzl IMO isn't worth much to have as there's not place near that telepoint where you can change back to your "real" job.
