Minstrel's Earring is already part of the original equation and Genbu's Shield can not be equipped with the Earth Staff at the same time. so the original 89% is the max number.

That is, as I posted in the GameFAQs topic (though nobody paid much mind), going under the very big assumption that the defense boosts are added first, then applied, rather than applied one after another to the result from the previous one.

For instance, with a 30% item and a 20% item ... if you add then apply, you have 30+20 or 50% damage reduction. If, however, you apply one at a time, you get 0.7 * 0.8 damage (or 0.8 * 0.7, the order is irrelevant), or 0.56 damage, equalling 44% damage reduction.

There is an extremely easy way to test this.

Go fight a Cactaur with 4 other people.
            He does 1000 needles.
My pt members take 200 dmg each.
I took 190 dmg. (I had a jelly ring on).

This has happened to me several times while down in Kuftal.
I'll test this myself with earth staff later on unless somebody can go do it sooner. Tredvolt (well known Bard on Bismark) and I have talked about this build for a really long time quite a while ago. We dont think dmg reduction works that way else we would have seen JP bards doing this I am sure. But like I said, I'll grab an earth staff to settle the dmg reduction equation once and for all.

I tried fighting a Cactaur with a Jelly Ring & Earth Staff with 4 other people. When it did 1000 needles, sure enough I only took 150 dmg whereas everybody else too 200 dmg. So it seems dmg reduction is added linearly and 25% isn't the cap on it (if there is a cap).

It seems like the Minstrel Earring latent effect doesn't work all the time. Yesterday I was fighting monsters for AF key and the 30% didn't seem to kick in when my HP were yellow. Might test against a Cactaur.

I might borrow an Earth staff and try the 1000 needles thing to test this further.

Having fun convincing them's good. Having a ton of $$$$$$$$$$ convincing them's better.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but has anyone actually got the Latent Effect earring to kick in with Earth Staff? -50% phsyical damage is really something if it works.

uhh , correct me if im wwrong, but -100% damage taken , would logically only reduce all damage you take by half, no?

if thats the case, you will still take crazy damage with your paper thin defense ._.

i thought the latent effects come into play when your HP is either at orange or red...

Uh, if you would normally take 100 damage, 100% of that is 100 damage. Physical damage -100% would mean damage-100? Which would mean it would hit you for 0 damage. This probably isnt how it works though, they probably dont stack like that.

                              2 theories at work here:

                              1) after the VIT & defence equation takes place and damage you WOULD take is figured, subtract the appropriate damage reduction (-89% or whatever in this instance)

                              2) Navpops' reasoning is, if I'm understanding right, that the Physical Damage - items are increasing your actual defence by a set amount. However, I'd kinda doubt it just from how the descriptions are worded. Defense + 20 would seem like a better way to say it than Physical Damage Taken -20%. Or course, defence doesn't even figure into the STR-VIT part of damage........
I don't know, it could go both ways. 1000 needles could have the same performance against both equations, but I'd think that since it's a defence ignoring attack that theory one would be the one that makes more sense.
