  • Mary's Horn

So I was out camping Mary all day yesterday. Logged on around 10:00ish, no Mary, had camped her for a short time the night before, and had an inventory full of Ram Skin's/Horn's, Lightning Clusters, etc, so decided to make a quick trip to Bastok to unload a bit. Went and dumped my inventory on my mule and started auctioning.

Headed back out to KH to continue camping, and lo and behold, she's popped and there's no one in sight! Killed her, no horn - Oh well, she dropped milk so wasn't a complete loss, continue camping her throughout the day and I swear I killed easily over 300 sheep, with no Mary popping (btw, camped her at F-9). Was there for about 5 or 6 hours, and getting discouraged, but at least filling my inventory with sheep leather and above mentioned items, though not trying to farm very harcore.

Had to go to work, but my wife took over for me when she got home. I had been at work for 10 minutes, called her up to tell her how to use wide-scan (MNK/RNG hunting her so I could wide-scan her), she turns on wide-scan, and there she is again! So I tell her to track, etc, she starts running over to it, begins attacking, swings, and

    -PURPLE-

Warrior provoked mid-swing. 18 Warrior with no sub-job no less. Sigh, I think, there goes a chance at horn. Then I think, 18 War, maybe he'll die. So watch him and get it if he dies I tell my wife. Warrior BARELY wins, had to use 2hr. CRAP, I think. So my wife asks him if sheep dropped Mary's Horn, and he says 'yeah, what's that for?' So my wife says I could really really use it for my BRD, and I'll give you 30k on the spot for it. He opens trade, and lo and behold, I have Mary's Horn now!!! I figure 30k isn't so bad, it wasn't so low that he wondered how much it would be worth at AH, but not so high that I felt really stupid for buying it when I was trying to camp Mary. Plus even though I kind of ripped him off, I didn't really, because he was just killing her for the milk, so 30k in addition to that's not so bad, right?

    BCNM40, here I come.

He has no subjob so he hasn't been to Jeuno yet to see the general price. So, he is a new person, and 30k is pretty fair, certainly a nice welcome present to the game.

Never ever ever pull by attacking when hunting nms. It's too slow, especially when there's competition around. :p If you're Brd/Whm, your wife should have used Dia assuming she knows how to use it. Grats on the horn and good luck with bc40.

30k! Lucky, it's 150k on my server...If I got it I'd just turn around and resell it though for a big profit, since you don't need it to win BCNM40.

You don't need Mary's Horn AT ALL, as a matter of fact. A stringed instrument is probably preferrable (although I don't use them because I have low stringed instrument skill). I don't know if the +1 to lullaby lowers resist rates, but even with piles of +CHR on, I always get partial resists in BCNM40. And those monsters whackin' on me while I wait for the rest to wake up is quite tedious...the WHM often sees my HP going down and spams a huge cure on me when this happens, and off goes little Mr. Mandragora.

Long story short: The less time between "awakenings" the better. Because if and when you do get that partial resist, it's best for the rest to wake up faster (for the above stated reason).

Now as for your topic, you lucky S.O.B. Just sell the thing for a 50k profit, get yourself a nice Harp (Lamia Harp if your level permits...doesn't do much but having a level 1 instrument just doesn't feel right, y'know?) and use it instead. Fears of the Mandragoras being out of range will soar out the window with a harp~~~
Finally got Rank 5! *Sings the "I love my Airship Pass" song*

From what I understand CHR affects whether or not your Lullaby is resisted, partially or wholely, and Mary's Horn adds to the time that Lullaby will be in effect if not resisted, am I wrong here?

Also, is Lamia's Harp any better than Maple Harp? Neither have any benefits, so aren't they pretty much the same thing? Little more range on the Lamia maybe? If Lamia's Harp doesn't do anything, why not just use Harp +1 or something at least beneficial if you happen to see your pt in need of some defense, or other beneficiary string instrument...

And yes, my wife plays FFXI, she's a 14 MNK, no subjob yet, and doesn't play as much as I do. She doesn't like xp grind, so she never really gets motivated to pt and lvl, and likes to tag along with me NM hunting, whenever I go, if it's not too aggro :p

And it's not quite BCNM40 here I come, I need to get to 40 first

On the contrary, I love Mary's Horn for BCNM40. It's just that you have to make sure you pile on enough CHR that you won't get many partial resists, either.

I go in with +20, and could get +26 if I was willing to put up with the -5 VIT from the signa. ... Add 2 if I felt like buying Loyalty Rings, which I don't. Usually there are only one or two - in very very very rare cases, three, and frequently none - waking up early, and that's really kinda negligible damage.

In the meantime, the majority of them are soundly sleeping for a while longer. And that 10 seconds or however much every sleep, really adds up over time. Fewer resleeps means you have to Lullaby them less, means it's easier for the melees to pull them off you. Fewer wakings means those bursts when they're all pounding on you are less frequent, meaning less MP needed to heal you.

Just make sure that for the first half the battle or so (until Dream Flower becomes an issue, really), the healers are standing next to you. That way, even if they do happen to get aggro (as I said, fewer resleeps means fewer Lullabies means less aggro for you), they won't move anywhere.

So yeah. I like the thing. But, I agree - if you don't have enough CHR to get full duration sleeps pretty reliably, go with a shorter duration instrument so you don't have to wait so long.

When I used to do BCNM40, before it went to crap, I had +17 CHR or so every time and never got resisted. It might be because you actually missed a mandra rather than a resist.

As for the Horn, it doesn't help block resist, it only prolongs the effect of sleep on the mob. By the time the mob awakes, though, your Horde Lullaby should be ready to go(in fact, that timer is what I use to determine when they'll wake up. It isn't always the same time, sometimes a few seconds early or late, but it is good reference). It casts fast, so the mob should only have enough time to get off 1 or 2 hits before they're sleeping again. There is almost no need for Mary's Horn unless you are rather slow when it comes to using macro or swinging through song list(which you shouldn't be, or I assume, aren't).

Completely up to the user, though. After all, someone's gotta buy these horns.
