They are B in dagger and C in sword as far as I know, there may be one or two other types they get a C in. Bards are not melee powerhouses for sure.

Looking through the AH, I wasn't able to find a single shield bards can equip

/whm makes a good bard sub. Bards are almost purely support characters in the endgame.

I just hit Level 24 BRD Yesterday (^_^ One more Level till Ballad :D)

BRD's Cannot Equip Shields, so your Sub Inventory Slot is always Empty.
As Atma said... C in Swords, and B in Daggers.
As of Now I am using a Poison Dagger. I find that using Daggers with "Additional Effect:" To be the most effect. BRD's don't really do any damage at all. 0-9 per slash. But when you combine those attacks with Additional Effect: Blind, Poison, or Defence Down... You start to see it becoming more useful

Pretty much 90% of BRD's sub WHM.
I personally am not a fan of WHM, so I stuck with my RDM sub...
Its an OK sub... nobody will scold you
