So the basic role of a Bard is...

I've been checking around and from what I've gathered bards are mostly intended to be buffers/healers. So is this pretty much a support character, or do they have offensive spells as well? It seems to me like bards are the kind of character everyone wants in their group but no one wants to be because they're not very offensive. Anyway I've never played the game so if u guys could help me out here it'd be much appreciated.

Yes, bards are support type of characters, and this job has been my goal since I started playing. I just reached lvl 30 last weekend and lastnight just go my BRD job. ^_^

Now, the whole point of what job you want to be depends on you. Alot of people like playing support characters, since a group of support characters can raise xp faster and a group of soloist characters. Though, you have to think about how FFXI is put together as well. Even though jobs such as WAR, SMN, and BST are very good as soloist, the game is made to every job can support another. For us mages, we look at jobs such as WAR, PLD, DRK, MNK, and the other fighter types as support jobs since if we want to solo, we would play a BLM, bind a creature then blast it into oblivian.

So in all, it depends on what you want to play and how you want to play. BRD can be very fun, and its always good to be wanted when you reach PT level. Otherwise your going to be standing around for a long time yelling for a PT>

and I'm glad that its like that, cause for all the BRD's out there.. they are even MORE wanted

yeah, I think I'm gonna start out as a blm/whm , and then at 30 switch black mage for bard. After seeing the bard artifact armor I just can't get over how friggin' adorable a taru would look in it, hehe.
