  • Elv. race Question about being a mage.

I tried to play Elv as a Redmage how do you get this to work? plus about Elv. and being a Blackmage how could I get that to work. See my down fall is the MP and the INT. isn't very high for the Elv. I was gonna goto Mithra but, I like face 6 and EVERYONE is that face as a Mithra lol

Yeah your gear will be more heavy towards MP than other races for full rest or convert, but since Elvaans do have better MND you'll actually work a bit better for things like MND based enfs and Stoneskin and stuff. And at higher lvls that's not much of an issue even if you get a bit less MP/HP ratio for Convert.

Still, nothing that a mix of gear and RSE can't fix, and if you worry about your max MP not being enough at lower lvls you can always eat a pie.

So, if you like being an elvaan go for it, although...

Any race can play any job. Don't worry too much about playing a "less optimal" race. You can overcome pretty much any perceived disadvantage via gear and skill (which will come in time). I personally know a lot of really wonderful Elvaan mages of all sorts.

My advice: Play the race and face you like the most. Otherwise you'll just be unhappy.

Your race choice does mater, but not as much as it seems at the starting levels.
Decient estimation of where your unmodified stats will be. http://www.datasync.com/~dsmith/FFXIStats/
I find it useful for estimating situational subjobs for use on capped events. (Not really neccisary but fun and helpful when planning)

Your RSE will help you out tremendiously since it adds intelligence and mana. (Female versions are the same statewise)

        Magna M Ledelsens http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/2163
        Magna M Chausses http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/2135
        Magna Jerkin http://ffxi.somepage.com/itemdb/2121
        totaling
        hp +36
        mp +60
        dex +5
        int +4
        agil +5

This item will be your best friend for getting mana back until 51 when the darkstaff takes it's place while resting. (Macro gear swap is your friend ^^ )

You'll find your short on mana in the earlier levels and if you stand by a taru or mithra geared simularily to you you'll be outdamaged on int spells, but not to such a degree of failing to get pt invites. Afraid my personal experience only reaches 30 rdm 40 for blm and 50 for whm so I only have low to midlevel experience to advise with. As whitemage you'll hit the healing softcap faster than the other races due to your high mind stat. You can get away with pulling hate, more than a taru, but you have to be more careful with mana conservation so it all evens out when taken as a whole.
I'm an Elvan whm so it's definatly possible to enjoy playing a mage job as elvan, it just takes a little more work in the low levels when mana is at a premium.

Re: Elv. race Question about being a mage.

Luckily the core spells for RDM are based on MND, save for a few that are INT (Nukes, Gravity, Blind Bind and Sleep) so you may have to invest in some INT gear for those later on but I wouldn't be terribly worried, especially when you get to 51+ and can use the elemental staffs.

Being an elvaan you'll want to prioritize MP and MND gear IMO. Since we have naturally high mind, it makes sense to boost it as high as we can. Why? Because a very high mind rating means paralyze will proc more often. The best way to do it is to swap out MND and INT on spells that need it, but if you just want 1 set of full-time gear then go for the MND.
