Hey all!! whatsup? I am bout to set off into FFXI today, I have read alot about it etc...But I really still dont know what to do. I cant dicide on what race I should be, I know Tarutaru are good at magic, but cant they be good at anything else too? I talked to a couple of my friends who used to play, then they just went up and quit on me. They say if I want to be anything but a Mage i should pic Elvaan, or Galka. (but I really dont like thos races.) But, I really want to be a tarutaru, but I am not sure if thats a good idea or not. I first wanted to be a Black Mage. Then I wanted to be a Red Mage, but now I dont know what I should be, can someone tell me if there is a good beginner job for a tarutaru basides mages please? Also, I dont know what server to join, so if you have a good server please let me know, I would also like to know of a linkshell that could help me on my way etc..Well, that is all I hope I didnt talk your ear off! bye, and I hope to see you in-game!

All races can do anything with enough effort. The only "extremely hard" race/job combo is Galka mage.

Tarus can be fine melees and even tanks. Gear > Skill > Race. Tarus can be good at anything, if you don't know what you want to be, level BLM to 18, WHM to 37, teleports will always be useful.

Server will depend, try to meet someone nice on the forums then just go that server. All servers are basically the same.

Firstly any race can play any job pick what race you want
secondly if you want to take Black Mage to 75 here's what you should do
White Mage to 18 (Unlock Subjob)
Black Mage to 37
Red Mage to 37 (Using Black and White Mages as Subjob)
White Mage to 37 (with Black Mage Subjob)
Black Mage to 75 (with White and Red Mages as Subjob as the Party see's fit)

ah! ok thank you, you too! You gave me the confidence to be a taru lol. But yeah...I hear that Taru Thiefs, and Paladins suck in a Party though...I dont know I just dont want people to get mad at me for being somthing thats "not cool" ya know'? But yeah I thought about it, and I want to be a BLM, if I dont like it I could always be a melee or somthing right?

yes i see lvl 75 Paladin Tarutaru's all the time you'll be fine pick what races you like to look at not becouse so and so can do this better

Gear > Skill > Race.

Taru is a fine choice, it's pretty clear the other races were only added as an afterthought for those who enjoy mediocrity (Hume), getting hit on endlessly (Mithra), have a pathological need to be noticed (Galka) or despise themselves (Elvaan). Just be sure to choose Windurst as your starting nation.

No. Gear improves a lot, skill improves some, race never improves.

Honestly, as long as you have enough skill to not be 'completely retarded', having more skill won't help a lot.

Taru is the second best race for THF, after mithra, and Taru is a great choice for PLD in a party. Taru PLD has a lot of MP for what they do, so even though they'll lose more HP, they can cure it back themselves. Some people even prefer a Taru PLD to other races like Elvaan or Galka. The only area taru PLD falls short is raw HP, which is only important for some HNMs, but a lot of that will be handled by more experienced/well equipped PLDs and NINs anyway.

I originally played Taru to be a BLM, and i've wound up leveling many melee jobs. DRG 37, NIN 37, WAR 45, and never had a problem playing any of them due to my race. In my opinion, the most well rounded races are, in order, Hume, Mithra, Taru, Elvaan, Galka. It's a lot easier to overcome lower melee abilities as a taru than it is to overcome lower magic abilities as an Elvaan or Galka.

Trust me, I played a lv70 Elvaan RDM at an FFXI event once, and it's MP pool was actually painful when you're used to playing a taru.

Hi there! My best advice is to play what you want to play, not play what you think everyone else will want you to play. That doesn't mean be a PLD/BLM in an experience points party, but stuff like race is yours to decide and you can excel at ANY job as ANY race if you are conscious of your gear choices, food choices, and your playstyle.

I chose Hume because I wanted a character that kind of looked like me (what a joke, I'll never be THAT slim again ; ; two kids made me a bit chubby) but I also have a Taru mule character that I enjoy leveling sometimes, and let me just say that the challenge she gives me as a level 11 Tarutaru Warrior soloing xp until I'm ready to go to the Dunes with her is a lot of fun.

I always say this to all the newbies, but if you want a friend right from the start, join Hades and send me a /tell or a friend request. I'm always happy to help newbies, or just talk to someone, and if you'd like I can give you a linkpearl, too, though our pearl is not as active as it used to be. We are trying to fix that though.

Nope, it's entirely my fault for being lazy and not working out. And also eating a ton of junk food. I dance three hours a week but that's not enough to lose "baby fat."

Hell though, they're completely worth it.
