Re: Question: "What is the best starting job"?
You can pick Black Mage, Monk, Red Mage, Thief, Warrior and White Mage when you first start. The others are quested at lvl30. Any mage is probably best for a taru but if you enjoy a melee job then play it!

Re: Question: "What is the best starting job"?
It depends on what you want to do.
If you want to take a melee job to 75 then THF and WAR are great choices. You'll most likely use either of them as a subjob.
If you want to take a mage job up to 75 then BLM and WHM work great for the same reasons.
MNK is useful and makes a great early sub for THF and WAR as well. Endgame it's pretty rare to see a /MNK on any job, but if you don't plan on making it a main job, MNK is an awesome sub to your subjob so to speak.
RDM works inversely. It tends to be a strong endgame subjob, but early on its usefullness as a sub is overshadowed by the other two.
In the end, all of them have their uses. Some are definitely easier to level early on then others. If you can make it to 10 soloing WHM in FFXI without killing someone, then you can do anything.
Whatever you choose, you'll have a strong urge at 18 to get your subjob and start over. If I had it all to do again though, I would wait til 20 and get the chocobo license before starting into secondary levelling. Those oversized chicken make things sooo much easier.

Re: Question: "What is the best starting job"?
You might want to hold off unlocking Blue Mage until you are further along in the game than just level 30. To unlock Blue Mage, you need to access to Aht Urghan. And to get there, you either need a ton of gil or do a pretty rough quest for level 30.
I think if you wait until you hit level 50, unlocking Blue Mage will be a lot easier to accomplish on your own. Alternatively, if you have a bunch of high level friends, you can probably get that all done at level 30. But do you really want high level hand-holding? If you manage to get it done on your own, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment.Lyonheart

Two lvl30's could duo it easy. By the time you've taken one job to 30 and a subjob to at least 15, I'm sure that they will have made at least one friend who could help them.

Re: Question: "What is the best starting job"?
Alot of people seem to confound what's the best job and what they would like to play best. There's also the thing that alot of games are unbalanced on their choices and one type will stand out from the others. I heard about Necromancers in WoW for example (not that I play WoW, I wouldn't know anything about it).
There is no 'best' job in the game, they all have good and bad points to varying degrees.
Question is, what would YOU find fun to play? If you just want to stand back and cast, Black Mage. If you like keeping a close eye on your teammates and keep them alive, play White Mage. If you like enfeebling mobs until they are squishy and easy to beat, play Red Mage. If you like to mindlessly pound on a monster for high damage, play Monk. If you like to do good damage and soak up the monster attacks for your party, go with Warrior (later Paladin, Warrior itself tends to turn into a damage dealer later on, but at first you're a bit limited). If you want to be sneaky, do high damage attack once in a while, and have someone else take the heat for it (with later abilities), as well as increasing the treasure pool, play Thief.
It all goes down on what you find fun to play. Personally I had in the idea to play Paladin since day on, and have no regrets about it, I still love soaking up damage like noone else can and live to talk about it.

Re: Question: "What is the best starting job"?
The best starting job in my eyes depends on how much you know about the game and how things work in a party. If you don't have a clue about how things work, start with monk. You will just be expected to show up and beat on the mob. That will give you a chance to see what everyone is doing and how everything works.
If you know a little more about parties, it all depends on what you intend to level. You said you wan't to do a blue mage so I would start with either warrior or theif. I don't know about end game for blue mages but i know to start, the best subs are warrior, then ninja then theif is really good in the 60's and maybe before. I don't think that the mages are used much as subjobs to blue mage.
One thing to keep in mind though, you are probobly going to change what job you want to take intot he higher levels. Before I had the game, I wanted to do black mage. When I had the game, I changed my mind and tried to go with theif and now I am doing beastmaster and don't think that I will be changing that any time soon. It looks like it is the job I have the most fun doing.

Re: Question: "What is the best starting job"?
The only one of the 6 starting jobs I would not recommend is Thief. While Thieves are a great job at later levels, they're arguably the weakest of all jobs prior to level 15.
It's hard to do well as a thief early on if you're a new player. Until they get Sneak Attack at level 15, Thieves have a low damage primary weapon (dagger), and no particularly useful skills in a party. In fact, daggers are so weak early on that most experienced players taking up Thief choose to use a 1 handed sword or Hand-to-Hand weaponry instead due to stronger weaponskills and better damage per hit.
For a new player just trying to learn the ropes of playing, this is probably the worst choice due to the frustration of getting to level 15.
