If you like playing DD, level all the necessary sub jobs to get a feel for the game. You'll probably decide what you like before you take them all to 37, but you'll also have most if not all the subs you'll ever need.

For melee, you'll basically need Warrior, Thief, and Ninja to 37.

Samurai can add Ranger to that list.

Dragoon can add White Mage to that list, which requires completely different sub jobs.

Mnk is best to start with. If you want to have spike and special ability's then when you get your sub main thf sub mnk and use Hand to Hand. If you like to deal damage and tank then go fOR war and sub mnk. Thats my opinion, I always start w/mnk. And your post isnt pointless, I took a whole day just to decide my race and ended up changing it a less then a month later. FF11 Is a long and complicated affair that takes alot of time patience and strategy, so asking questions about what to commit to is only natural. Remember it is only a game and to have fun. So choose what you think is the most fun! Good luck
