I need help deciding what to do w/ my char

Im new to FFXI and i dont know what to do with my new character.

I want to be either a paladin/warrior or dragoon/warroir, I dont want someone that does a whole bunch of damage but is super fragile, and i dont want someone that's a super tank but barely does any damage.

If i am Paladin/warroir, i dont know what race to be, if I should have shield/weapon or just weapon and what kind of weapon i should use.

Look around. Take your time. You can always take on any job you want.

You can find out a lot of information about both the Paladin and Dragoon jobs in the job-specific forums for those two jobs here on FFXIOnline.

Dragoons deal excellent damage over time against normal enemies in combination with their Wyverns, but have weak defense and a decided lack of ability to hit things for large bursts of damage. Dragoons use polearms as their primary weapon.

Paladins are tank jobs that don't hit terribly hard but have excellent defenses. The most commonly accepted weaponry for Paladins is sword + shield.

if you want damage but no tank monk is the way

If this is the case, Paladin is not for you. Neither is dark knight or monk. Consider being a ninja. They deal decent damage (assuming you have the right gear) Shadow images basically take the damage instead of you, so you're able to attack at will and "tank", assuming the shadows don't wear out really quick and there's a good rdm in the party.

What Mog said. It doesn't look like Paladin is the job for you if you don't want somewhat minor damage in comparison to your defense. On the other hand, Dragoon is a nice "I can attack and don't wear paper armor" job.

Keep in mind that Ninja has some cost prohibitions that can make it difficult (but not impossible) for new players. Just make sure to quest all of the spells that you can, and buy the others from NPC vendors when possible.

ninja is a very costly job ~.~

id recommend warrior, they dont deal a ton of damage, and yet they can still take the hits...espically if your subbing nin...but that leads us back to square one heh heh

I think there are a lot of WARs out there that will disagree with you.
