Blackmage is more burst damage. They do huge damage in a short amount of time, but not over time.

check out more discussion about this here.

      Re: Damage Dealing

FFXI jobs are classified (by players not by designers) into 4 main categories. Tank, Healer, Damage Dealers and Support. Since FFXI best aspect is player social interactions, most people need to have a party to earn experience points. A party is composed of a Tank, a Healer and a combination of Damage Dealers and Support.

Black Mage belongs to the Damage Dealers category and is recruited by parties or alliances do deal damage. There are 2 types of damage dealers: Nuker type (or burst damage type) and pure damage dealers. Long ago, Blm and Rangers (maybe Drk too) belongs to the 1st type. Now, only blm (and maybe Drk) seems to be there. Rng lost their powerful accuracy and tend to go with the normal damage dealers.

Depending on what you are dealing with blm can be the best damage dealers you can get. However, other damage dealers can overpower a black mage in many other situations. So you won't find it rare people choose other damage dealers instead of black mages for experience points PT or some events.

BLMs have highest burst damage capacity. MNKs have highest DoT capacity. In a short fight or against HNMs, BLM will usually out on top. In an XP setting, MNK will usually come out on top.
