  • So let me get this straight about jobs?

Hello all, I'm pretty new to the game and have spent the night reading up on forums about what job I want to play. Currently I like the tatru race but can't decide whether or not I want to play a BLU or something completely different such as a Corsair or Ranger.

Now I know I can change jobs as much as I want but I was wondering how much of a impact on my character will it be if I played my taru up to say 20 as a RDM then decided I want to go Corsair. Does my race limit my character and does starting off as RDM limit it at all?

I don't mind playing Hume if that's a better choice. But if my taru can be an effective corsair or ranger I'd be rather go that route.

    thanks in advance

no, race does not "limit" any job. you will get bias however as you are leveling up.

however, BLU, COR and RNG are all advanced jobs so you need to get to 30 in another (base) job to be able to unlock them.

starting out as RDM is fine, but it doesn't sub well with the 3 jobs you listed. If you want to maximize your play time, start by leveling up jobs that will complement your main job (look at the specific job forums for more info).

    Thanks Yyg!

Starting off as RDM does not really impact your character. I think you might get one piece of free gear or a free spell or somthing, but other than that, no.

Being Taru certainly effects what you will do later in the game. Taru's have a large MP pool, and excell at mage jobs, while having a small HP pool and doing poorly in a tanking role.

The shortcommings of any race can, however, be shored up by using appropriate gear. You can do whatever you want in this game by having the time, gear, and playing tactics to support whatever it is that you want to do.

So, in short, yes your race will effect you. Will it make some things harder, and some things easier? Yes. Will it make anything impossible? Only if you're not willing to try.

In your opinion, would Hume be the best bet for going either caster or melee in the end game?

Hume is going to be the most balanced of all the races, perfectly centered in almost all attributes.

Its also easier to make them excel at any job with gear.

That being said, they won't be quite as stuning or unique of a character.

If you have either a versatile play style or a desire to do mage and melee without too much hassle, then almost any race except Galka or Taru will work well for you. Hume is just more middle-of-the-road than others.

Hume is the most balanced race in the game. All of the stats are about the same, not favoring or abandoning any.

Tarutaru have high MP and INT, but low STR and HP. They are built for casting, but you can be any job you like and make up for your low HP and STR with gear and food.

Never let your race limit what jobs you do, just do whatever you like. I've seen Galka WHMs and Tarutaru PLDs and both were just fine. Just make sure you have the right gear and food to optimize your affectiveness

PM me if you have any direct questions, I don't usually revisit threads.

If you really like taru-taru, be a taru-taru. If you pick something else just for the stats, you'll regret it later. The stats of each race are not limiting enough to worry about. You'll make up for them with gear and skill. Galka don't have a lot of MP, so they make really good mages because they learn to manage their MP much better than other races.

Will a taru-taru MNK put out higher damage than a MNK of some other race with the same subjob, gear, and food? No. Will anyone whose opinion is worth worrying about care? No.

Re: So let me get this straight about jobs?

Yea, I forgot to mention that, race + gear can be optimized if you're the tweaker type who only wants the 100% best. If you strive for that extra 0.01dps, then you'll be concerned about it.

I still caution that being a Galka WHM (or mage in general) is hard. Plenty of people do it it, but not right off, and not without some in-game knowledge and money. Thats why I started out as monk, and soloing BLM and WHM to 10 was 80% melee.

In any case, choose what you like and rest assured that you can cover any shortcommings by careful choice of food and gear.

If I've learned anything in the three times I've started over in this game (don't ask - or, you know, do - I don't mind talking about it), it's that it's imperative that you choose the race that you like the best. Nothing else really matters in the long run. But you are going to be looking at this character for a long, long, long time, and if you don't like looking at it, you're going to be a grumpy gus.

truer words have never been spoken.

and I still stand by my statement that no race will limit you. if you care and really try, you will be good at any job you choose.

Dont forget that as you play you are more than likely gonna end up playing most of the jobs, whether it's too see what they're like, you discover you need one for a subjob or you get a little bored and want to chang it up for a bit. For instance when i started I wanted to play drg, thats great so i hit war to 20 thf to 30 then drg to 41. During this time I also hit blm, smn, bard, and oh yeah I'm currently levelling whm to 42 (@31 now).
                      Long story short..see above,
Any race can do any job, you just have different gear priorities.
