Re: Red Mage Hume?
This may be shut, but in case it isn't! Yeah, that'd be great. Hume is a near-ideal RDM race.
Remember though, that you won't always be RDM. So Hume is also good for versatility.

Re: Red Mage Hume?
I'm sure it's been said a hundred times, but I guess it bears repeating. Hume is generally considered the most balanced "do-everything" type of race, and red mage has a reputation for being a jack of all trades that can do a little of everything, so if you're coming into the game with no idea of what you want to do, that might seem like an appealing choice.
The truth is, your race plays a very minor role in your character's performance. If played right, no race is really gimp at any job in and of itself. When you pick your race, you should choose one you find visually appealing that represents how you want to appear to other players in the game. You're going to be looking at that character quite a bit after all, and you don't want to get stuck with an avatar you don't like because you picked based on stats alone.
The other thing is, the jack of all trades line about red mage doesn't really hold true for very long. Every job develops into a more specialized role as you get higher in levels, and red mage stops being a decent replacement for a melee or a nuker very early. If you've played the game before, you probably have some general idea of whether you prefer playing a tank, a damage dealer, or a support job, so pick a starting job that reflects what you want to do in the long run. If you can only narrow it down to mage or melee, I'd say start with whm as a mage or war as a melee. Both are pretty ubiquitous as subjobs, so they won't go to waste later on if you decide to move on to an advanced job.

Btw, moved to Race & Job Type Q & A

Re: Red Mage Hume?
Tarus make the best rdms.
Hume is passible.
I'm a hume rdm, and regret not doing taru. RDM is the least magey of the three mages, but it's still definately a mage. I'm thinking of eating marron glaces for pts currently just for mp, and one of my wishlist items is an ocean rope (it's like 9 million, and I'd get it mainly for more mp). And taru rdms can solo as good if not better than humes.
And tarus can really play any job.

Re: Red Mage Hume?
Hume is a more than "passable" I'd say. After you get Convert, if you gear yourself right you'll have more than enough MP to do your job right. I also eat Marron Glace to help my MP out. Any race works for any job, but I wouldn't suggest Galka unless you're feeling bold.RDM 75 - SMN 72 - WHM 37 - BLM 37 - DRK 37 -

Re: Red Mage Hume?
Rdm AF looks cooler on Hume tho ^^
Hume has higher MND, too.
Not having to worry about switching in MP gear as Taru is nice. Less gear to carryThere are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,

Re: Red Mage Hume?
Humes and Red Mages are parallel in the sense that they both are good at everything, but masters of nothing. I am a hume also, but I have not yet tried Red Mage yet. It could be a nice combination, but this all depends on the skill of the player and whatthe player does to make it a great race/job choice. I'd say go for it!

Hume isn't bad. Maybe passable was a bad choice of words. How about "decent"

Originally posted by HamletIt seems that way at first, but even though red mage is capable of many things, for the majority of the game, you will be backline casting spells. The main thing you need for this is mp, and since tarus almost naturally equal in hp/mp, they make ideal rdms.

Personally humes and tarus are my favorite choices for races, but I was just saying if you are going to choose a hume you should be concious of the fact that you will run into some problems at first stat-wise compared to other races who are masters at the specific job, but you will learn that you can surpass it and be just as great or even better than the race specified for the job.

You can do a good job as any race at any job. Race is never a game-breaker.
But if you want to be the best, for a mage job, you should choose taru. There's just no way that a hume could surpass a taru stat wise at any lvl if they both are trying equally hard with gear. If you can come up with a gear/lvl combination where hume's stats are better than a taru's, go ahead and post it because I'd be infinitely interested in seeing it.
Tarus are the best at 4 jobs in the game: red mage, white mage, black mage, and summoner. Humes are decent at every single job in the game. Because tarus are deficient (although, again, not job-breakingly deficient) for melee and tanking, it's only fair that they are the best at something, and that something is mage stuff.
I'm not saying this stuff for no reason. It's the way the game is made. I have no malice towards humes. Hell, I play one. I just answer these kind of questions with the knowledge and experience I have for new players, because race is the one thing in the game you can't change without starting over, so I feel it's important to actually have the facts.

Re: Red Mage Hume?
Yea it's true, I've actually seen a Galka BLM out-damage a taru BLM at the same level. Just mix and match, and see what suits you best. And keep in mind, Red Mage won't be your only job through the game, so don't keep your decisions so narrow-minded.
