  • monk, theif, or warrior? plz help!

Finaly got game, and im deciding weather to make monk theif or warrior! so hard to figure what to do for my job ... i have a strong feeling about monk, but i dunno about theif, and warrior in every game warrior is so single based, but they do good... and theif im thinking will be like rogue, but they sound lame for some reason. and im thinking melee cauze iv been melee in every game and been successful at melee. should i try magic for once? will i be good? what should i do!!! any thoughts? iv read alot about each job but i just dont know! plz give me some feedback on each of these and give me your 2 cents, i could really use your coments. thx again for the help im sure yall will have somthing pop up.

and for race i got my mind set on elvaan, this bad? or good? suggestions plz!

pick the race that you like graphicly. AS you get higher and higher race will be the least factor in your performance.

Warrior is the basic of all melee jobs. It's good if you try it out to understand the basics early on.

Monk is an easier job. Their main role is deal damage. Attack, punch punch, not much to be said.

Thief has more technical side compare to war and mnk. They can be pretty weak on their own soloing, will be hard if you pick Thf as your first job. But not impossible.

You'll find yourself playing all three at one point or another in your FFXI career (especially if you level any melee job). All three make suitable subs for different jobs at different times, and are also great main jobs on their own.

Remember that you can switch jobs any time you'd like by choosing "Change Job" from your moghouse menu.^^

Well first like to sat welcome to the game. I would say start out with war first. Just to get a feel for the game play and style. I played war at first and lvled it all the way to lvl 30 till and had monk as my sub job. You'll learn more about sub jobs as you progress thru the game. I personal say war. It becomes a good sub job for advanced jobs like pld, drk, sam, nin. and more. thats just my opion. good luck and lfeel free to ask any question always willing to help out.

This morning I'm soloing my THF in Latheine and trying to level up Dagger and Sword at the same time. It's painful. I don't even plan on using either in a party setup unless asked (pre-Viper Bite), but I like to be prepared.

Slow going. Even slower if you don't have a sub. But not impossible.

As has been pointed out, you can change jobs anytime you like without losing any progress on the jobs you've already leveled. So whatever you pick at the start isn't set in stone or anything.

That said, I'd say go for monk. Before you get your subjob (which involves a quest at level 18), it really is the simplest of the three. You'll have exactly one role in parties as a monk with no subjob, and it's not a hard role. It's a good way to get a feel for the game.

MNK is my starting job of choice. It has really low startup costs, and a relatively high-surviveability. Plus, less options = easier gameplay at first.

I've started over too many times.

Re: monk, theif, or warrior? plz help!

Okay I skipped the swearing. Thief isn't hard soloing with at all.. Anyway, it's not hard to level first level's with either, but in my opinion, you'd be better of leveling Warrior to 30 at first. Because you appearantly like to be melee, and having warrior leveled comes very handy at later levels, for melee jobs. Worrying about money for a job is a bit irrational, when you want to level a job, you should be able to do fine with money, might just require a bit more work. Monk also uses Warrior as subjob for a long time, so leveling Warrior at first is a good thing anyway.

I thought about this myself a lot lol, and I think there are few practical methods for this.
Method 1 for Monk, you level Monk as first to level 18, then you get Warrior, and level it to 30 straight. Then, you can either check in the advanced jobs, or if you still want to do Monk, level Monk to 60.. and beyond. But by the time your Warrior reaches level 30, you will know what to do anyway.

Method 2 for Warrior, you level Warrior to 18, then you level Monk to about level 15, and then Warrior again to level 30, and see what you do from there. (Probably need to level Ninja and stuff.. nothing to worry about for now.)

Method 3 for Thief.. It depends. You can level Monk to 18 first, and then Thief with Monk subjob to 30, using Hand to Hand weapons. You can level Warrior to 18 first, and then level Thief with Warrior subjob using a sword and shield. Many people prefer to use swords. Also, you can ofcourse level Thief to 18 first and then Warrior or Monk to 15, and then Thief again. Whichever you like. Thief starts to be fun from around level 15, you get Sneak Attack(does a lot of damage when you attack a monster from behind). On a side note, something you have to remember when leveling Thief, always keep your Dagger skill leveled. Really important.

A few more things you should remember, is that Having Warrior leveled is good for the rest of your melee life in FFXI, and that Warrior as first job is pretty easy to do and easy to learn with. Also get used to long time leveling, lol.

                  Weapon choices:
                  Monk: Hand-to-hand only.
Warrior: Preferable Axe or Sword, with a shield, or a Great Axe is very good too.
Thief/monk: Hand-to-hand, keep Dagger skill leveled too.
Thief/warrior: Sword or dagger with shield.

All you got to think about is the first 30 levels of playing, for now. The rest you can find out later.

Re: monk, theif, or warrior? plz help!

I will admit that my THF soloing would be a heck of a lot easier if I was just wearing my Republic Knuckles, but I'm trying to keep my other weapons up to speed so it's not so much fun.

And regardless of skill/experience/whatever, THF with no sub pre-15 is not a lot of fun solo.

The other advantage to starting as monk is the White Belt. The only starting gear worth anything on the Auction House.

Elvaan should be fine for race =D and for job, I'd say definitely level war to 30... this job can play many roles in parties from 10-30, and will help you learn about how things work I wouldn't start thief until you get the chance to watch one work in a party, there's some specific things you need to do

It was easy and fun for me. Use a sword for one thing. Even thf can rock mobs to death with Fast Blade. Another thing, invest in a bow and arrow. Archery is hands down king of 1-15 leveling for the jobs that can use it. Do you realize that with meat you can take down an easy prey in one hit for 30-40 easy exp? Even without meat you can still sometimes one shot or at least take off a healthy chunk of the mob's HP. I spent plenty of time just finding a nice comfortable spot and firing off arrows at everything around me.

lol can you imagine the sense of power a level 7 thf can get by one shotting a steady stream of ep mobs? Beats hacking away at dc and em mobs and having to rest afterwards. Even launching an arrow at a dc or em mob will make it tons easier for you to finish off, especially if you have fast blade ready from all the tp you gained from one shotting ep mobs.

I'm an expert at thf soloing. Soloed all the way to 25. Trust me, it's easy and fun if you know what you're doing.

EDIT: Well 18-25 was a pain, but you should expect that anyway. :p And I doubt many others would be crazy enough to attempt that.

I have no trouble soloing (I try and solo everything to at least 20, and beyond if possible), but I was trying to put it in perspective for folks that aren't vetrans of the game.

I go with Marksmanship, because I level it on my WAR as well, and I like the status bolts. Since you're mostly righting EP/DC solo, they proc pretty much every time.

I keep my sword leveled, but I really prefer H2H on low leveled THF. I've found it to be so much faster.
