starting character :mage?

um i was wondering,i'm a mage in oblivion,and i was wondering of being a mage is a good starting character to play with.

Definately! Mages are good starting jobs, in my humble opinion. There's always a need for them, and you can level pretty fast with the growing demand.

One question tho, do you want to deal damage, heal, or a little of both?

Blackmage is for you, my friend. If you decide to take it up, just make sure you cast in moderation. In other words, give time between each cast and allow the meat shield to get hate. As long as the tank is doing his job efficiently, the mob should almost never come to you when you cast.

yeah, they're all area of effect attacks. Once you start getting to the higher levels, you'll eventually get Thundaga/Blizzaga/Firaga III. Amazing stuff.

Basically, you learn the special moves of the monsters of vana'diel.

Yeah, you can't do any of the advanced quests jobs until you're 30, anyways. The jobs you can start out as are red mage, black mage, white mage, monk, thief, and warrior.

Blue Mage

It's really a shame the other jobs don't have cool, flashy backstories like that anywhere.

If you're looking for a gameplay mechanics type description, blue mages are half breeds between melee damage dealers and offensive spellcasters. They have decent melee ability and a lot of spells designed to deal big damage up close, but also some defensive abilities that allow them to be used as a tank, and a handful of unique enfeebling skills that make them good support casters. Thing is, blue mage is an advanced job in the superlative. You can't earn the ability to become a blue mage until you've leveled another job to level 30, and the job takes a lot of knowledge to use at all, much less correctly, possibly more than any other job in the game.
