Basically WAR gives you Berserk (25% Attack up Defense Down for 3 minutes, reuse delay is 5 minutes, so it's a huge attack buff that lasts 3/5 of the time you're fighting.) At 50 (when subbed, it's a level 25 WAR ability) you get Double Attack, which kicks in around 10% of the time and can also occur during WS (so you have about a 50% chance that one of the hits in Penta Thrust will Double Attack, turning it technically into Hexa Thrust =P) WAR also has a passive Attack+10 trait at 60 DRG (30 WAR.) You also get Provoke, which can be useful in certain situations even when you're being a Damage Dealer. DRK, on the other hand, offers very little: Last Resort, which is a watered down version of Berserk. Lasts 30 seconds, and grabs huge hate. The recast time was fairly long, too. There's also Souleater, which takes off 10% of your current HP and adds it to your hits as raw damage, but when using DRK as a sub job, it's much less effective - it still takes off 10% of your HP, but it adds less than that as raw damage. Basically, it doesn't offer enough to compensate for Berserk and Double Attack.
Just one thing, though...please, please, please don't play WAR as if you were DRG. They're vastly different jobs which use vastly different weapons. WAR may be able to use spears, but they have a lower max skill with them, and they can't use lances, which are by far the superior polearms. Also, polearms are the only weapon you'll use as a DRG in EXP parties, so it'll practically level itself up. If you want to level your spear skill beforehand, wait 'til your WAR job is at level 30 - you can just hit some level 5, then 10, then 15, then 20 mobs and it'll shoot up quickly with little risk for you. What you want to use as a WAR are Axes (one-handed, should be used with a shield) and Great Axes. Axes give you the benefit of using shields, which can cut down on the damage you take (as well as being the strongest of the one-handed weapons.) Great Axe's WS Shield Break gives the mob Evasion -40, which is an incredible attack boost even when you're fighting mobs 5-8 levels higher than you.
axe+shield, dual wield axe and great axes are the "best" choice. There are different factors that could make sword+shield combo decent but most of the time axe and gaxes are better. Just don't use a great sword.
There was a thread on this...let me see if I can find it.
There are no benefits. You'll have a higher skill limit with axes and great axes than with any other weapon. That means higher accuracy and attack, as well as learning Weapon Skills earlier. That aside, at low levels axes and great axes are simply more powerful than swords and great swords. Their WS are arguably better too. Raging Axe will outdamage Fast Blade simply because axes have higher DMG than swords. Hard Slash (first Great Sword WS) would be harder-hitting than Shield Break (first Great Axe WS) if you had a Great Sword and a Great Axe with the same DMG, but Great Axes always have higher DMG, bringing Shield Break's raw damage close to Hard Slash's, and Shield Break gives Evasion-40, which is awesome beyond words. Burning Blade is mediocre damage, while Smash Axe stuns. Swords don't get a stun WS until much later. In the 20s Great Sword is learning Freezebite, which is also mediocre damage, while Great Axe gets Sturmwind, which is the most damaging WS at its level. Dual Weilding in itself is technically an improvement over single weilding in terms of damage, but the improvement is marginal and you lose your shield. When it comes right down to it, you want to use axes and great axes.
Too many months later, and I still don't have FFXI. =( After a year of trying to get this EVIL game, (Yeah, I wanted it even before I joined this forum) I wonder if it's even still worth it. ;o And I tried to get into the 360 beta, because I got one during income taxes (my moms spend lots of money time) and thought that would be a good idea. But none of the stores had the magazine =( So yeah, I'm done complaining.
lol sweetkitty, remember an old thread . . .? I actually have a PM from you about getting a worldpass when I got the game from months ago . . . lemme get the link for the thread from forever ago
Well the Worldpass idea is off-topic anyway. Here, go to http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/citizen/ and scroll down and go to "Character Creation Trial," you can create a character there (not for real, just to see how they look like and such), it's fun to do, I still do it sometimes.
Double Post Edited:
o.O I didn't remember that. Guess you got all your way up to level 75 planned xD. I had, but turned out a bit different :p... I didnt get past level 20~24 for the first 6+ months playing. And a underleveled subjob too. x.x

I still think I'm going to be a taru Blm/Smn, but I've been thinking about a hume or elvaan ranger . . . would thief or warrior be the main job to level for that?
I don't you'd have to worry about Race too much.. Hume make good black mages/summoners too. Anyway, Rangers usually use Warrior or Ninja as subjob, so I guess you'd be off pretty good leveling Warrior first . In my opinion to get Ranger the quickest way: Start out as Monk and level it to 18, than as you get Subjob, become Warrior and set Monk as subjob, level Warrior to 30 using Sword/Axe and Shield, and then unlock Ninja and Ranger. But.. leveling Ninja or Ranger is very expensive, so it might not be usefull to level it as first job.
