  • Job for a newbie

I'm going to get FFXI with my Christmas money once the 25th comes by, and even though I've been looking at faqs, guides, and forums for a little over a month, I haven't been able to find out what a easily playable job for a beginner would be. I've been thinking about being a taru Black mage and later sub Summoner, but I'm not sure if that's such a good idea for fisrt character. Any ideas? It would be appreciated.

It works. Level Black Mage, then White Mage (as subjob for Black Mage and Summoner), and once your Black Mage or White Mage reaches level 30 you can do Summoner. ^^
Don't start out with White Mage though. Hard the first 10 levels. ><

Ookay . . . Well, now that I know how I'm going to start off, I just have to try and survive for *counts* 4 more days. And not only that, my mom is saying she will refuse to put the $15 each month on her credit card. So, I have to think of something. Anyways, enough rambling.

O.o I'm kinda in the same boat as you Sok. Except for the fact that I already installed FFXI! Unfortunately I'm at school (only 15 Btw). Anyways, make some sort of deal with your mom, just pay her the money for her to use her credit card to pay for the monthly fee.

              Re: Job for a newbie

If you want my advice, since I'm playing on my 3rd account (Technically, 5th account, since I've held 5 different POL IDs in the past three years) here is what I found the best way if you're looking to main as a BLM or SMN ...

              BLM to level 18.

Soloing BLM is slow, because of the reliance of your magic pool. However, the fights are definitely faster, so it all evens out in the end. If you use cookies religiously in the lower levels, you get more mileage than eating pies. That's because cookies offer substantial refresh (I call it Refresh 2.0) while resting, something most mages forget when they're toting around Rolanberry Pies at level 10 ... remember to keep your ambitions in check when fighting monsters at low level. Since your first job will be without the aid of a subjob, I think it is best that after level 5, you don't challenge evenly matched monsters (Monsters that are same as your current level) and after level 8 or 9, you don't challenge decently matched monsters (monsters 1 or 2 levels below your current level) This is important, because most beginning players don't have the resources to equip themselves in the very best and do not have many of their combat and spell skills capped. It is generally better to bang out 2 monsters for 40 exp each than to struggle with one monster for 72 exp

              WHM to level 37.

Now, after obtaining your subjob, while you may be eligible to start questing for your advanced job at level 30, you should try to be patient. This will pay off in the long run, believe me.

Power your WHM to 37, which at present, is the highest level a subjob can be under the current level cap for your main job (37 + 37 = 74, 75 being the level cap) Since WHMs are the most sought after healers at these levels, this means you'd be wanted for the first chapter of CoP missions and as well as the lower capped BC fights. Remember to make as many new friends as you can and with your WHM job, being able to raise players, especially in the mid-nub areas will raise your reputation a lot. Porting (Teleportation) services will do this as well.

SMN or BLM to level 75.

From this point, it is straightforward. If you took my advice, you never need to go back to level a subjob if you're going to dedicate yourself to these two jobs. However, SMN job class might be a tough sell, especially because you will not be able to get Fenrir avatar yet and that is one of the more important avatars a SMN could have if they're appointed as a main healer in any party. BLMs will get much more invites and you'll be able to participate in everything under the sun, especially in end game situations.

First account was made for private beta when I tested the POL client and got to play the same FFXI game that Japanese players were at the time. Second account was when I participated in the open beta with other NA players.

Third account was my very first retail account.

Fourth account was a friend's account and I had that for a while then I deleted off my characters.

Fifth account was made because I missed having a second account around. Plus, I'm getting bored with my main character and thought it would be fun to have a new character and a new direction (Mage-centric versus Melee types)

Debating on a sixth account ...

                      Re: Job for a newbie

For those who are uncertain with what class or even type of job you want to be, there are 2 very useful useful jobs to level just all around.

They are Red Mage and Warrior.

Red mage will give you an assorted amount of spells and skills to aid you no matter what mage job you decided to chose in the end, as at the very least it will help you with prebought spells for your support job. It also alows you to skill up several magical skills symotaiously, making transfer from class to class rather helpful.

Warrior will do the same, but rather for weapons. It will also provide a good melee subjob for almost any melee class througout the starting levels of the game. And it is a MUST for a PLD or NIN tanking class.

If you are new player and uncertain, these two jobs were built for you to explore in earlire levels in what you like as in the end it will most likley benifit you no matter what you choose.

                      Art done by Fred Perry.

why does everyone say whm hard to level 1-10? its way easier then blm... just get the hammers and hack away. blm heavily relies on its spells for damage and 7-10 is hell with all the downtime.

You think 7-10 was bad...? Try not finding out about Valkurm until level 14... Yeah. I was a n00b. I'm still a n00b, but now I know that I'm supposed to party now. ^_^

all jobs are hard to take to 10 if you have NO idea what you're doing. on the other hand, all job are easy to take to 10 if you know what you are doing.

my first time to 10 it took me forever. now i can do it in my sleep

make sure you find some in-game friends to show you around. that works wonders^^

1-10 is cakewalk, some just take longer than others.
