  • Need Help deciding class

I am going to start playing the game after a friend told me about it, and I am not sure what classes I want to play lol. I want a class that can use magic well plus be able to use WS and fight decent. i dont need to be a DDer but i would like to be able to hold me own. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking RDM/BLM, or SMN/RDM. Can SMN fight well? These are my problems lol

Any help, advice would be great!
    Thank you in advance

be a DRK, you melee real well and have some magic on the side.

DONT be a RDM, your role is not to melee.
DONT be a SMN, your role is not to melee either.

or wait to see how the new jobs play out.

Red mages can both fight and use magic decently well at the beginning of the game, but as you get higher level your attack begins to be less and less useful compared to other jobs.

Dark knights are strong attackers that have some attack magic available to them, but the power of their spells is unimpressive compared to dedicated spellcasters.

Ninjas can deal damage with their weapons and through spells, have magic to weaken the enemy, and can hold up well against attack because of their Utsusemi spell that absorbs a certain number of attacks for each cast. The drawback with ninja is that every spell uses an item that costs money, so it can be very expensive to play.

Dark knight and ninja are advanced jobs, so you need to get another job to level 30 before you can do quests to unlock them.

I would suggest trying red mage for starters so you can get a taste for everything and then decide what you like best, to focus on that. No job in the game is good at everything. Jobs that excel in attack, defense or magic fall behind in one of the other categories to keep balanced.

Also remember that there's no reason you have to decide what to play before trying it. You can pick a job to try out and then switch to another one at any time if you decide you don't like it.

I think you were a bit harsh there. He mentioned "to hold out on your own." That usually means being able to solo stuff (Not just for exp, mind you)

RDM is the way to go. Not strong with melee, but their survival capabilities surpass most jobs, even BST (If you took their pets away from them as is oft the case in many uncharmable beastmen areas) If you want to be able to cast spells and be able to hold out on your own in some situations, then RDM is a winner.

DRKs don't do good solo ... trust me ... 3 years of that shit I should know >.>

SMN aren't good with melee. They have avatars (pets) and are similar to BST with the only difference is that BST's job ability (charm) defines their roles while SMN's magic pool and skill level determines their pet strength. SMN isn't an easy job and you need to know your avatars and your own job quirks inside-out to be effective.

Another spell casting job you might consider with melee capabilities is PLD. Kind of a bit more defensive though.

If you consider ninjutsu as a "spell casting" ability, then NIN might also be on your A list.

Not sure what you want out of the game though. Maybe wait for Treasures expansion to come out before deciding on anything (Although you *still* need level 30 minimum to get an advanced job anyway)

DCs and EMs. I can do ~2k an hour. Not counting the ring. I haven't been too successful on Ts yet, but I haven't played with my nin sub much yet.

Rdms can solo by melee or kite-nuking. Which is better depends on mob type, level difference, and the geography.

                      Re: Need Help deciding class

Well, 2k an hour is a "best possible" number. I don't do that on a regular basis and it's not easy.

To the OP: There are certain conditions when it is and is not acceptable for a rdm to melee. Most people go by the blanket rule that rdm should never melee, but in the first half of the game that isn't necessarily true. If you decide to go with rdm, just remember that your primary duties are to enfeeble and backup heal, and anything you do on the side should take a back seat to that.

I'd take RDM 101, then after that I'd take BLM 101, just so I can learn the basics. And if you really feel like being helpful, it would be good to take WHM 101 as a prequsite before you take BLM 201 & BLM 202. I heard that some professors are really bad, but that one Shantotto is really good. Just watch your back during class. Some students disappear from class field trips in Valkurm Dunes, but if your careful you'll be alright.

                            Yeah....I had a bad experience with blm 101. I got Shantotto for the class. What a bitch! She has to be the most self-centered girl on the face of the earth. When she told us to make a fire spell and attack a mandragora, I sort of "accidentally" set her hair on fire. She was cursing rhymes so fast that my head couldn't take it. I still don't see the reason for her giving me detention. ; ;
