  • How to protect myself from mages in PvP?

I like to do Ballista and Brenner from time to time on my PLD or WAR. However, I'm still very noobish in Conflict, and I don't know how to handle mages properly. I've been considering putting together a set of elemental resistance armor to help immunize myself against key enfeebles. Problem is...I don't know where to start. I need suggestions as to what enfeebles are the most important for me to protect myself against. I'm thinking of upping my Ice resistance for Bind and Paralyze, and my Wind resistance for Silence. I don't know what to think about Sleep; Dark resistance is very hard to get, and it'd mean sacrificing my resistance to Wind and Ice...that aside, at 50-cap I have Resist Sleep II on Paladin, and if I'm not mistaken you also gradually build up a resistance to sleep during Conflict. Then there's also the chance that I'll get hit by stuff like Diaga. Also, if I were to sub WHM, which Barspell would you recommend I keep up when running into a battle?

While we're on the subject, mages, when a melee approaches you, how do you usually react? What do you fall back on first, and what's your back-up plan? And, melees: how do you approach mages?

Here's the gear I'm planning on getting:
Elemental Charm: +6 resistance to the 6 natural elements
Goshenite Earring (two): +4 resistance to Wind and Ice each
Wolf Mantle +1: +3 resistance to every element other than Darkness
Mythril Cuisses +1: +1 Fire resistance, +3 Wind resistance
Peridot Ring (two): +5 Wind resistance each

    Total resistance:
    +30 Wind resistance
    +17 Ice resistance
    +10 Fire resistance
+9 to every other resitance (except for Darkness.)

Possible adjustments: I might use Malfrost and Malgust rings instead to raise my Ice resistance to +27. Also considering using Faerie Shield for another +3 to all elements.

Any and all advice would be most welcome.

I would keep buffing the wind and ice resistance and keep poison potions on for sleep resist.

As a mage when a melee comes to me I usually start Bind > Gravity and try to get close to some teammates for help. However I am not a great ballista player (as you know Armando ) sometimes I have a great match and sometimes I just flat out suck.

Hori retreated from battle. What a coward.

Well when i play ballista i would have to agree with Hori that there are two things that are most commonly cast by the majority of the mages when a melee is on their heads. Bind, and Sleep. If RDM add in Gravity.

The thing is, when you are getting hogged by a melee, you are in pressure mode, you have to get them off you or buy some time until your teamates can help you out unless you are a RDM ;o then you are a bitch....but for every other mage, -ga >> Bind or Sleep is the way to go, so as sugguested get Ice Resistance and CHUG those poison pots. Catholion(sp) are better off for erasing Gravity, however not everyone will sub RDM or there will be a RDM on the other team, but WHM/BLM, BLM, and RDM/BLM will have Bind for sure. Ice is the way to go.

The other enfeebles are not used as often IMO, because MP is usually better off spent elsewhere.

        NIN/THF & flee from -ga.

Seriously though, there's ways to do this, but you need assistance from other players.

This is a teamwork event. Don't think you can be the Next Michael Jordan (tm) because you're wearing the Nike shoes named after him.

lol no derailing, this is one of those threads I'm interested in.

Unfortunately, I had to retire before I got to experience ballista, so I don't have anything to contribute

Use the ribbons (noble's ribbon, scarlet ribon ext.) they work great for that kinda stuff.

for the sleep spells have a whm heal you it wakes you up.
you could also sub whm for the elemental magic def bonases, but thats only if you can take people calling you "Gimpped" (why i dont know)
Many people call me but i think they are just jealous that the voices are talking to me

As PLD I just go PLD/NIN and try to keep shadows up. Whenever you're fighting a mage, try to stay borderline in their casting range, so you can run right ouf it they start casting. Bring ranged weapon and run at em if they start casting a slow -ga spell on someone, they will go down very fast.

One better... THF/NIN on Windsday with a Garuda's Dagger. Mages reeeaaaallly hate you then. Was in a match last night where a BLM left the match and came back as MNK he was so pissed.

To the OP... there really is no way to protect yourself. Aside from poison potions and using /quarry to get remedies and such you have no way to really prevent magic damage, only maybe reduce it by a slight amount.

Lol, I'm not expecting to be able to solo everything and everyone, or to single-handedly win Ballista. However, being highly resistant to Gravity/Silence/Bind/Paralyze must surely help me be more useful to the team. Being disabled can be very troublesome

                      Only Ribbon with elemental resistance I can use at 50-cap is Noble's Ribbon, and I'd lose 17 defense, unfortunately ; ;

Yes, I think I'll do that. Magic Defense Bonus reduces magic damage by 10%.

I'm not looking for magic damage mitigation (though /WHM certainly helps a lot with that) but rather resistance to the critical debuffs. I really don't like being disabled

Thanks for all the tips :3 It was very helpful ^^ I think I will indeed use the Maldust/Malfrost rings, got them just recently, and managed to find an Elemental Charm on the AH. Now I just need to get those Goshenite Earrings made.

My general strategy is to run up and break them in the face.

But seriously, I avoid mages unless I have some of my teammates backing me up. And ALWAYS use a poison potion.
