  • A guide to Odd Job Combos

I might be the guy you want to talk to about odd jobs... I am currently leveling up Drk/Pld. It is intresting to say the least.

The trick to playing an odd job combo is that you have to understand that SE made the jobs very well and most work with almost any other job as their sub. Now there are exceptions but that can be assumed.

You have to understand that you won't fight like a normal version of your job. Most of common combos are well defined in their roles by the millions before you. For an odd combo you must blaze that trail most of the time for your self.

    Golden Rule:
Melee without magic/Mage subs = bad.
(mnk, thf, or war with a whm, rdm, blk, sum sub-job)
These classes tend to not play out all that well because you simply don't have enough manna to cast the needed spells to make it effective. For example I had a party member who was a Galka Mnk/Whm but he had only 30 mp to cast with.

    Golden Race:
Humes tend to play most odd jobs very well. They have very even stats so it makes it easier. Elvan are next in line as they are close to humes.

    Reviews:

    Hume Drk/Pld w/G.Sword
As a user of Drk/Pld I can offer a bit on this. You best raise your healing until it hits cap because you will take many roles at the same time to make this job usefull. You lack a bit of damage but you are still a DD. You don't have voke (the biggest pain) so let your party know. During the downtime between attacks cure, most people want you as a back-up healer if you can mannage. If Dark magic is your best friend, Drain is your wife. This combo offers a great deal of HP regaining from your self. (Cure, Drain, Bloody Weapon, ect.) For best use go with armor that may have less Def and take stat bootsing ones. (Legionair set is good if you are from bastok.) Your Pld Sub makes up for it. You should only take damage when you get some hate from your spells or from AOE and you can survive it.
+Cures and Massive HP regen. (BIG PLUSS)
    +Very even stats.
+1/2 Way decent MP Pool (Not small but I normaly have about 20% of my MP left after a battle.)
-Lacks attack that other drk subs give.
-Hard to keep track of all your jobs in a party.
    -No Voke.
    Recomend? Strongly (but thats me)

    Hume War/Rdm w/Fists
My friend played a War/Rdm. This one is an exception to the rule before. He forcued primarly on attack (using hand to hand weapons for the speed bonus) and tossed out damage very quickly with his fists while still keeping on top of his back up heals. His MP pool was a bit small but that is somthing he can live with he says. He adds to it with items even at the cost of a bit of HP. As for equips, he took full warrior armor because sometimes he had less HP than others.
    +Very Fast decent Damage
+Heals and Buffs for yourself and your friends.
    +Enfeebling damage.
-Again not as much attack and HP as other combos.
Recomend? Yes but its an aquired taste.

    Gal Mnk/Whm w/Fists
A party member once used this combo. I must say never use this job. It lack def alredy and by not using a good sub he forfits a great deal of HP that he needs (as monks lack in armor). Yes there is the heals and protects that come with it but when you only have 30 mp at L22 to cure with you make little diffrence. They are not open to alot of magics so that aspect is gone. Galkan MP pools are bad and the whm's stats don't help you much as a melee.
    +Cures and Protects
    -Small MP Pool
-Other jobs offer alot more for a fighter.
    Recomend? Never.

Actually the closest to a Hume is a Mithra...>_>

I dont see how /PLD gives you massive HP Regen..if anything subbing WHM at lower levels when theres lack of healers would be a better choice for DRK as you also get more MP and status cures. Your PLD sub wont make up anything if you have crap DEF Armor, i dont see how that works.

WAR/RDM sucks with fists...sue GAxe for Shield Break as that can lower Enemy Evasion alot and help other people hit the monster dealing more damage culmatively than anything your fists can do. i dont see how RDM works even as you get piddy MP.

I agree with the last one though

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't any job without /mnk fairly useless with h2h? I recall reading/hearing that without martial arts trait you only attack with one fist. Either way you don't get to use the better WS like raging/howling fist and dragon kick. So basically you stop getting WS at 37 besides spinning attack which you wouldn't want to use in parties anyway.

Lionx speak your mind in its own safe bastions. I speak from expeirence, not conjecture.
Magnius, I agree. A mnk sub is almost usless. I'll add that.

        Double Post Edited:
Btw its not true that you can only use 1 fist when your not a monk. The trait Martial Arts is this:
The "Martial Arts" abilities lower the delay of hand to hand attacks."

        MA1 lowers it from 480 to 400.

Re: A guide to Odd Job Combos

How is that conjecture? Look at your spellist, how is that better than a WHMs? I still dont see how /PLD gives you massive HP Regen, i dont believe PLD even get Auto-Regen. Also you might get a few more points of VIT but if thats the case then if i sub PLD as a WHM then i would not die in 4-5 hits if it can make up for my armor being cloth while a PLD being heavy armor.

Thats not to say /PLD wouldnt work for backup healing at lower levels, however a WHM sub would be infinetly better, you can poisona as well as other -na spells along with more MP and learn spells faster than PLD sub.

I dont see how /RDM helps at all at lower lvls on a WAR...you dont get a speed bonus subbing RDM and using H2h, and GAxe DOES help alot more than you think, when you start missing and you do a Break everyone starts hitting somehow. If i remember right, if unresisted, Breaks give the monster -40 Evasion.

You have half enfeebling skill and can only land Dia, and yes you can buff and heal but unless you got alot of juice syou are going to run out of mp fast...and you need to rest and lose TP. And why isnt there another mage to buff..? There should be a WHM or a RDM in your party.

And no MNK sub is totally awesome with WAR, you can boost and provoke for a good solid hate gain when tanking. And i believe you misread what Magnius is saying...

And i can post what i think as well, its very funny that you post something on a forum and then shut yourself out from the opinions of others, so much for discussion and purpose of having a forum.

Btw i have leveled WAR up to 40, i honestly do not see how /RDM can benefit in any way. Unless you can prove to me how DRK/PLD is better than a /WAR or /THF and HOW i can magically make up my weak DEF by subbing PLD and somehow gain fast HP Regen...i am not going to really believe any of that...as well as WAR/RDM...i think saying next closest to Hume is Elvaan is already enough for the rest of the post..

You're talking about a war/rdm, using a D weapon with no passive martial arts.

If you're gonna sub something besides /rng, /war or /drg before 30 (I assume that's what level you are, heaven help you if you're higher) /whm is infintely more useful than /pld, not to mention being actually quite prudent on DRK main.

I do speak from experience and Lionx is right, subbing /whm is more beneficial than /pld. You talk about conjecture, have YOU tried /whm for drk?

I cannot, in any good conscience, recommend anything you have said! Even the last one about MNK/whm.

your information is just wrong on so many levels. you have taken some of the primere damage dealer jobs in the game and watered them down into mere fractions of themselves.

                Thanks Yyg!

Dunno... DRK/PLD is like an oxymoron. =P

And since their schools of magic are entirely opposite of each other, you won't be doing much for healing like a PLD/WAR potentially would or can.

It seems like an interesting job combo. Just don't expect me to invite ya in life or death situations. ^.~
