NQ isn't "sub-par"; NQ *is* par. Tanks wearing lizard armor in Yuhtunga are sub-par. The difference between par and sub-par is pretty dramatic. HQ (and certain NM gear) is for high level people working on low level subs, people on their third or fourth jobs, or RMT. The performance difference between normal gear and HQ gear is minimal.
Some crafted upgrades of conquest gear have HQ-like icons and names but aren't actually HQ; the above doesn't always apply to them, although they usually have "HQ2" versions that really *are* HQ and generally extravagant.
Seriously, do you consider an SH sub-par because it's not SH+1? That's just crazy.
Any job can be hideously expensive if you insist on having all the hideously expensive toys for it, but this is almost always unnecessary. (Erase is not a toy and you really should get it and learn how to use it despite its cost.)
P.S. There are a few expensive NM/BCNM items that really do have a significant performance impact, but are unreasonably priced for people on their first job. Significant does not mean drastic; you will not be useless if you don't have them. Don't obsess about gear until after you beat Maat and start doing gods and Dynamis; before then, you gain more from leveling than from outrageously expensive gear.
A. The +1 and +2 instruments do make a noticable difference, and don't cost the ungodly amounts some other +1 weapons do. Its a question of whether you want to "just get by" with your job or actually play your job to the best of your ablilities. If you're skimping on your equipment and it makes a noticable impact on your party, then you yourself may not be gimp, but you are gimping you party which is just as bad.
B. Pre 50 bow rng spends about what you said per lvl. 50+ bodkins are 25-30k a stack, and a xbow rng will be shelling it out bigtime since acids are 25k, holies are 15k, and bloodies are 30k. Now, I haven't compared those prices to the prices of ninja tools lately (been putting off lvling nin again), but if your server prices are comparable to my server's prices for nin tools, then unless you're 40-49 and just using scorps, then prices are fairly comparable. 60+ it just goes crazy with Demons at around 45k, same for Kaburas.
I'm not trying to turn this into a "My job is more expensive than your job" (infact, before the last economy jump I really felt like I spent more on NIN than RNG, just not astronomically more)

On many, and probably most items I would probably agree with you. There are some items when the the difference is so great b/w the NQ and HQ items that there really is no reason not to work a little harder and get them. Take HQ bows for instance. An extra damage, lowered delay, a lot of +ranged attack make a SIGNIFICANT difference over the NQ versions. Plus RNG is an already an expensive job, people know that when they get into it, why skimp on something that does cost more (but not outrageously so) when it will help your damage so greatly? I do not expect everyone I party with to be decked out in amazing HQ gear. Just b/c I wasted weeks on end farming for every last kickass gear I could possibly get (minus leaping boots, f*** those overpriced things), I realize I hold myself to a higher accountability than I hold others to, or they hold themselves to.
For those one their 1st or 2nd job, that 1.8m price tag says otherwise.
1.8M isn't that much by the standards of today's economy. Its a critical spell that is used a great deal. If you're running a lvl or two behind on getting it, thats one thing, but by lvl 40 you can easily do the BCNM a few times and get it for free, or atleast have made enough money to buy one. If thats really too much work for you, then you really shouldn't be playing the job. Sorry, thats just the way it is. (And, if you're on your 2nd job to 37+ then you really have no excuse)
I RNG 75 I WAR 37 I NIN 38 I SAM 50 I Woodworking 92+2

Thank you. Beat me to the reply since I'm tied up at work.
I don't think most servers have the kinda prices your talking about Caspian. Midgadsomr which seems to be one of the high expense servers only has Acid for 12k Holy for 8k and blind for 20k per stack although Ranger and Ninja are still probably some of the most expensive jobs on any server because of the large amount of consummable supplies they need to go through.
Yeah, Acid's on Alexander are at most 8k/stack iirc. Same with Holy's. Bloody Bolts are up to 10k but hold steady at that price.
I get what you mean though, and I agree. RNG isn't cheap, but playing both I drop significantly more Gil on NIN per lvl. My RNG's pre-50 though and my comparison was when NIN was @ the same lvl.

i play ranger and ive played ninja. ranger is horribly expensive, yes, but ninja does beat it out.
when you play both jobs to their peak potential, ninja costs more.
in fact, ive found ranger isn't as expensive as most people think. you have the cost of your arrows... and that's about it ninja has tools, spells, and some very expensive gear. most of the gear for ranger is actually pretty cheap, unless you're buying like all +1 junk and stuff.
ionia of Cait Sith! 75 RDM, 75 THF Plotting World Domination and doing silly emotes on a server probably not near you! I live to entertain!
Ninja does get cheaper after 60 though when you quit spamming the Tonjutsu Wheel so towards end-game it probably evens out between the 2. Kabura Arrows aren't cheap I know. But with the enfeeble tools skyrocketing in price, it's definitely a close race. lol
Hope we lose that race.
EDIT: Price of NIN vs. RNG is not counting gear. If you add in ideal/semi-ideal gear, NIN will beat them everytime.
Well, I haven't played BRD in a while, maybe HQ instruments do make more of a difference than other HQ gear. You can always try them and see, and if they don't make enough of a difference, sell them and do something else with the gil.
But the #1 way to run yourself into gil trouble is to spend gil without thinking about it. What are you getting, what does it cost you and is it worth more than you could get by spending your gil a different way? Is it even something you need at all? Just like in the real world, if you're not careful with your money, it won't do as much for you. And HQ-mania is a common way to waste gil, so think about it before you buy, if your budget is limited.
From experience if your gonna be farming for very, very exessive hours for a minor upgrade it ain't worth it. Just play with what you have, long as your nice, do your job, and don't do anything stupid, your party shouldn't care. D:
