  • New to the game

Well I'm new to the game, just installing it now (bought it today, saw an add in EGM about it and it looked damn cool) Anyways, I've been lookin at some of the races and they look pretty cool, but I have a question. Are there any male Mithra? I mean I saw a sig here somewhere that looked like their mithra was male.

Anyways, an answer to my question would be appreciated :D

P.S. I was thinking of becoming a Dragoon/Warrior, is this a good idea?

    Re: New to the game

If the sig in question said "manthra" then that is a term used for male players who play a mithra. The mithra race is always female. I guess it's to balance out the whole galka thing since galkas can only be "male" (they technically have no gender). Lore wise, male mithras exist, they just aren't playable.

As for your class decision...I haven't played in a while nor did I ever really know much about DRGs to begin with, but just know that they have a history of being at the butt of many jokes. I'll leave it at that. I haven't played the game in a while, perhaps more has changed with DRGs (I will be starting fresh in only a few days...exciting!), but it doesn't seem like much has.

Just realize that any class in this game can get to level 75. It's not like you won't get there, it's just the fact that some might require a little more persistence than others, or better yet, a group of friends who don't care about the XP per hour or how much damage you're doing. If you can find a group like that, you're gold.

        Re: New to the game

Play whatever class you enjoy. My initial character was a DRG and I made it up to level 75 no problem because I proved myself and could hold my own against any other DD I've partied with.

Dragon job are not the most like in ffxi for some reason like its pet dragon die easily and need 2hour before u can bring it back alive. But just not long ago, square make a change to the pet dragon which now u can bring it back every 20mins and also give dragon job a new 2hour ability instead of the old bring dragon back alive.

                Re: New to the game

:D Well sadly I installed it, patched it and stuff, and I have to go to school! Either way thanks for clearing that up. I've always been a fan of lances.... or giant swords, but in this case I'd like to prod stuff with Penta thrust (I think this is a skill) Just wondering, is the quest to get this job harder than most?

                  Re: New to the game

Dragoon job is a fine job choice, and your sub choice is practically ideal until the 60's range, I believe. Well, the quest isn't really hard, but it takes some time (mainly travelling) and you'll need some level 40+ help to beat a NM (Notorious Monster, named monsters with far more HP and sometimes higher attack, defense, evasion, etc. than the average mob) dragon at the end of the quest. I mean, the dragon isn't hard to beat at all, but yeah, you'll have to travel and you'll need help. Have fun ^^

:D Thanks for the info. I was also wondering if I could name my pet. I heard that if you go to a place called Norg, you only got to choose from a list of names.

                      Re: New to the game

you choose the name of your dragon from a list when you start the job. then you can change it from names on another list at a later time. Here are the names you can choose from if you are curious: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=14

                      Thanks Yyg!

Sweet, the name I want is on the initial list too O.o.

Also, in the game, I havnt really researched alot about the battles and stuff, is it like all the other Final Fantasy games with a popup menu? Or do you need to type something in or make it a macro?

                          Re: New to the game

Both. You can use the menu that pops up for battle or you can use macros.

                            1. you have a menu to do everything in battle after you attack (click on the mob and select attack)
                            2. you can assign macros 2 bars of 10 that can have up to 10 configurations of the bar(so possible to have up to a 100 macros per bar)

                              Re: New to the game

There IS a pop-up menu, but it deviates from previous FFs in that the actual melee combat is automatic. You choose Attack and your character will attack periodically, where your speed is determined by your weapon's delay, and altered by any Haste/Slow effects you have. You can use Job Abilities, Magic, and Weapon Skills at any given moment manually. Job Abilities are almost invariably instant in terms of activation, and have a reuse timer (you can't use them again until a certain ammount of time has passed.) Spells have a casting time (though a few are practically instant) and also have recast timers. Weapon Skills are your "overdrives." You have a TP (Tactical Points) gauge that goes up with every hit you score by an ammount that's proportional to the speed of your weapon, and also goes up by a more diminute ammount (2) every time you're hit. Once your TP gauge reaches 100%, you can use any Weapon Skill you have learnt. New WS are obtained as your skill with that weapon increases, and vary from weapon to weapon. You can charge your TP gauge up to 300%, and that extra percentage will be used for additional effects (typically more damage, however, three 100 TP WS tend to be stronger than one 300 TP WS except for the final WS.) Items may also be used at any given moment of combat, and also have a "casting time," but aside from using food periodically to enhance your stats, you'll rarely find yourself using the traditional Potions and Ethers because of how expensive they are. You can also move your character while in combat. You need to be within a certain range and be able to see the enemy to do melee attacks, however, some abilities (such as Cover and Sneak Attack) require you to have a certain placement in relation to the enemy and/or party members, and abilities and spells also have different ranges from which they can be used.

The pop-up menu is quite similar to Kingdom Heart's, if you've ever played it. However, almost all commands (both system-related and combat/character-related) can be carried out through text commands. Macros are available in sets of 20, and each macro can hold up to 6 lines of text. You can use them to facilitate your job, and as you gain more abilities, you'll find that you need to use some of them in quick succession while communicating what you're doing. As a melee job you'll generally have macros for your Weapon Skills, Job Abilities, TP reports, and later on equipment swaps so you can melee effectively and coordinate with the other melee to perform skillchains. As a mage you'll often have equipment swaps, spell macros (pure caster jobs can have over 30 spells quite easily without being particularly high-levelled, so you often macro the ones you use often,) and MP report macros.

                              Hope that helped ^^
