general starting advice

I woud like to progress past the beginning 20 levels fairly rapidly as I have played them several times before when I first tried FFXi.

My goal in the game is to play a WHM but I recall them being very difficult to lvl up as a first job (is this the case?). What would you guys recommend in the way of initial job and then subjob combo with the intent of being a primary healer later?

Take blm to 18, complete the subjob quest, then switch to whm. Take whm to 18 using blm sub, then switch back to blm and take blm to 37 (or 40). Then, you can take whm to 75 without ever having to worry about switching to lvl sub again. And you won't have to worry about overflowing with extra equipment either.

And not to sound silly - but I am assuming WHM is as group friendly in FFXi as healer generally is in every big mmo?

Honestly, leveling to Lv.20 with RDM was pretty easy for me. Didn't take long for me to get to Lv.10 soloing as an Elvaan RDM.

I think I was fortunate to get some good parties though. Then again, parties in the Maze of Shakrami have always seemd to go very well. Seems like hardly anybody else parties there these days.

RDM would help you hit Lv.10 a little faster if you purchase a sword, and the Healing, Enhancing, and Elemental skill ups will help you for later jobs.

But that was just with my experience. I've heard Elvaan mages having problems getting to Lv.10, and others saying it was easiest run they ever had. So your mileage may vary. But good luck, and welcome back!

Yes, every party is going to be looking for a WHM.

And Fastcart hinted at something very helpful. Keep the old armor. You're going to be using the same armor for leveling your subjob. At the lower levels this might not be as easy, but it's a good suggestion. I kept my hands on a number of armor sets, but I level just about all jobs. (Check my signature) Will save you time in having to go back and buy all that armor again.
