  • Elvaan Red Mage, Warrior or Monk?

I just bought Final Fantasy XI, I already dicided I want to be an Elvaan, at the begining I wanted to be a Red Mage but I started reading some threads and got a bit dissapointed with the Elvaan Red Mage combination, mainly because people say its mp isnt really good but also because I read that the best subjobs were White Mage and Black Mage and my idea was to have something like Samurai/Reg Mage or Ninja/Red Mage.

Then the idea of becoming a Warrior came, the problem is that most of my friends are going to be warriors and I wanted something original. Also I wanted my advanced job to be either Ninja or Samurai and Im really not shure how Ninja/Warrior or Samurai/Warrior works.

Also, I thought of the idea of becoming a Monk, I havent made any research about this job but Ive heard its nice. But there is also the problem with the subjob or advanced job.

Could someone please help me choose the best job?...Or if you think all of my ideas are bad, could you give me any recomendations?

Re: Elvaan Red Mage, Warrior or Monk?

Well sam/rdm and nin/rdm are not going to get you far. Rdm for those jobs just is not an acceptable sub.

Warrior is a good job for an elvaan. I personally like the look of the tall elvaan male with dark hair in the warrior af.....but then again I'm a woman. ;P In the lower lvls, you'll end up being a tank for the most part. Lvling up nin is required too since that seems to be the hot sub. It's also sweet to see an elvaan swinging away with 2 axes! War/mnk in the beginnnig and war/nin when you can get the sub open and lvled.

Now if your going to lvl war for a sub, that works well. A lot of the melee jobs use war as a sub as do the tanking jobs. So getting war to lvl 37 is advisable since that will help you in the long run. Sam/war and Nin/war are totally acceptable. Ninjas end up being tanks though so if your looking to go for a damage dealing nin then you have a long road ahead of you. People see you seeking and immediately thing "Oooo a nin tank!!" and it doesn't matter if you put in your search comment (Meat) (Shield) (No, thanks) or something similar because they will just ignore it. Sam/war is a good dmg dealer and sams are some of my favorite additions to a party. With a good party you can expect at least 2 skillchains a fight with a sam....if the mob lasts that long! LOL

Monk is another job that will take advantage of the war sub. Monks usually end up tanking a lot in the lower lvls also because of their high hp. And elvaans make good monks. I don't know how it is now but lvling monk in the lower lvls wasn't too hard because you tanked a lot. But the mid range lvls were hard to get parties when I lvled it. The higher lvls started to get easier because you can exp on bones and mnks rock bones. It's just that midrange that can be slow and painful but that can be said for a lot of damage dealing jobs.

All in all its your decision, you can be whatever you want to be. Always remember that its quite easy to just be another job if the one your on just doesn't suit you. It's nice to find the perfect job right off the bat but it never fails that you'll see someone else playing a job and you'll be like "OMG I want to do that...that is cool!!". The next thing you know your lvling that job! LOL Happens all the time! Have fun thats the most important thing!

Well as I said earlier, Nin is viewed as a tank in this game. A mnk sub would be for a damage dealing nin. Since you will be tanking and need to get as much hate on you as possible then /war is the way to go. You get an ability called provoke that will be very valuable for a tank.

Now Sam/mnk is a more doable combination but still not a popular one. I think I see more sam/war, sam/thf, and the diminishing sam/rng than I do sam/mnk. Remember you can play whatever you want to but realize that your playing with other human beings. They have their own feelings and opinions and if they feel your job combinations suck.....well it will be hard to lvl since it will be hard to get parties.

I've met many who display disdain for the Elvaan RDM pairing, but it can be played well if you're shrewd enough. To be true, I wouldn't recommend Red mage as a very good subjob in any capacity(unless it's the only choice you have left). But I'd see a RDM/WAR pairing as acceptable in earlier levels, though later you'll likely be expected to take on a more magical subjob to support the increasingly magical duties.

Any race has it's ups and downs when it comes to being a RDM. Elvaan have their MND for enfebles and STR for Melee (solo only post 51 elemental staffs), Taru have their MP and INT for nukes or Magic Burst, Hume are good all around (generaly speaking).

On the topic of NIN/RDM, I think that it could be viable at the latter levels (post 40) if you want to spend alot of money and be a Ninjutisu Nukeing NIN. I have not personaly tryed it out but hey, SE made the Job/SubJob system to be flexable so go out there and try something new!

No Ifs Ands or Buts about it.

Re: Elvaan Red Mage, Warrior or Monk?

I played Elvaan rdm. I enjoyed the look of the af, the way my male elvaan looked casting, and being tall. LOL But I didn't like the limited mp pool. Once it was post refresh, that helped A LOT! But it was still frustrating at times. It's why I stopped playing it.

Then I played 2 mithra rdm's. Again limited in mp but a bit better than elvaan.

But now I have been playing taru rdm and it made all the difference in the world to my enjoyment of the game.

              Now I'm not saying the only good rdm is a taru. I am saying that it made MY enjoyment better. I just started a hume rdm recently too so we'll see how that goes. {Galka} {Red Mage} {No, thanks}

this discussion seems to be more general than RDM. Moving up one level.

btw SAM/rdm and NIN/rdm are both bad, bad, bad.

                    Thanks Yyg!
