  • A few questions...

Hi, I'm getting FFXI soon and I was just wanted to know a few things before I started...

I would like to be a good DD using a Greatsword. For this could anyone reccommend what would be the best race and job/subjob to be able to do this. Also could someone reccommend equipment that I should be using with this. Also could someone give me an estimate of how long it would take to hit 75? Thanks

Greatsword is best used by the Dark Knight. Warriors are good with it too, but most times it's better to use Axe or Great Axe with warrior. Race doesnt matter, but Elvaan and Galka are the strongest races, while Mithra and Hume are next, and Tarutaru is the weakest.

Equipment changes too much to bother pointing out. Try to focus on Strength and Attack equipment from level 1-40, and Strength, attack, and Accuracy from 40-75.

To get to use Dark knight, you must first level a job to 30. I recommend warrior. Eventually you will need to have thief leveled to sub for dark knight in certain situations too.

If you really want to use a great sword as your main weapon, I cant see any other job but DRK fitting for that. Even then, you need to keep your Scythe skill up to date in case your party wants you to use that. A level 66DRK/33THF with great sword is a wonderful thing though.

1-75? Figure about 1500 hours if its your first time through the game. This is assuming you take time to farm gil for good equipment, and do at least some quests and missions.

Ok thanks! So this is what I've decided. Either Galka or Hume Dark Knight. I can't really decide between the 2. Also i was thinking about Elvaan but I heard they weren't very good. So which would be better for a Dark Knight? Galka, Hume, or Elvaan?

Also so is this what my leveling should look like?

      Level Warrior to 30
Then sub warrior for DK(?)(so i'm 1/30 or does it not work like that?)
      Level DK to 60 so I'm 60/30 DRK/WAR
      Then level Thief to whatever?

      Or something like this?

quote from antawn : your path doesn't matter as long as you end up as Drk with fully levelled sub

        some more break down.

level any job to 18 and complete quest for sub job. let's say you start with war. 18 war

next you'll want to level up another job to use a sub job for your warrior. In your case you might want to try Thf and bring it to 15 or so. Warrior/thf is not as popular as war/nin or war/monk but it works.

now go with war/thf till 30. get dark.

and you should be good all the way til 60drk/30war. where at this point it's a good time to fully level your war and thf both to 37.

don't stick to this kind of "shortest route" plan too much tho. give yourself time to play around with other jobs too. war/mnk, war/thf, thf/nin, thf/war, you'll be surprised how the jobs you only level for sub can be use with each other too.

Well the shortest and most effective route to becoming a lvl 75 Drk is

Mnk to 18, do subjob quest
Start over as war/mnk, using Axe and/Gaxes while lvling Gsword on the side.
          Take War/Mnk to 30
          Unlock Drk
Then you can take Drk all the way to 60 as a Drk/war, but keep both Scythe and Gsword lvled and up to date.
          Take Thf/war to 37
          Take War/mnk to 37
Take Drk/War or thf to 75, switching when needed.

Now that is the quickest and most effective route, but if you want to lvl other things you should. There's lots of other things to do in the game then lvl, but I'm sure you can figure that out when you start playin.
