They won't cut off updates to the Playstation 2 version. Just because its sales weren't as spectacular as the PC version in North America does not mean the same for Japan.

Even so, it's not like Square Enix can give the excuse of limited capabilities on the PS2. If anything, the Xbox360 is even more limited when it comes to expanding Final Fantasy XI because of its measly 20 GB hard drive. How does Square expect to extend the life of FFXI by bringing it to the X360 when the hard drive will be halfway full once you're done installing it?

"No games will need HD support" and didnt give a dang to find out about FFXI to see what it would need.

Just because the initial release hd is limited in size doesn't mean that another version can't be made. The smaller hd is a smaller loss if it doesn't go over well. If its popular, then a bigger hd could be on the horizon.

As far as the PS2 not being supported anymore, the JP's love to have the newest and brightest tech. I'm sure that Sony is counting on this with the release of the PS3. In turn, if the sales are big and they release a hd for the PS3, it's possible that SE will discontinue support for the PS2. While they may have a portion of the FFXI market, its not the majority.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if there was a "back door" agreement with MS. They release FFXI on the 360 to infuse new blood into FFXI and SE helps boosts the 360's sales with a promise of halting support for the PS2 eventually. MS loves to corner the market so this wouldn't surprise me one bit. Of course, everything we think is just conjecture but it does seem likely that PS2 support will be discontinued somewhere down the line.

You forget that Tanaka himself said that his own plan for FFXI involves getting it on as many platforms as possible, thus greatly strengthening the possibilities of success. It would mean hell for Square Enix to discontinue support for the PS2 version, especially with the clouded future of next-gen gaming in Japan.

Clouded future? The PS3's will sell like hotcakes. I don't think that is clouded in any way.

Talk is cheap. I have heard many times "Oh we are going to do...." "Yes, we'll still....." and in the end they don't. In the end its all about what is better for them. If the PS2 is holding back more development because of its limited capabilities, you can guarentee that support will end........when is the question.

I agree with grandmom on the hd question. I can easily see MS coming out with a new 80gig hd a few months later, charge another 100 bucks or something. Ppl get pissed off about stuff like this, but they know they'll end up buying it anyway.

The more systems that can play at once, the more people will play. More people playing means more revenues. Alot of people were unhappy when they learned PSOs could not be played together.

Discontinuing support after such a short time would make people pretty resentful (like forcing people to buy expansion packs right away or saying you must buy this to play it now). People don't like to be forced and as much fun as FFXI is, if the price tag for the next month is $315 instead of $15...even if only a one time charge, you will see a customer drop, before the PS3 users get into it.

LOL Exactly. It's about the $$ and not about making people happy. If they know it will succeed then they will do it.

Same goes for discontinuing support for the PS2. After the PS3 is released, many of the people with PS2's will eventually buy one. Now we know that the hd is not coming out when the system is released, so the stragglers that didn't buy it right away have time to still decide. Eventually the hd will come out and eventually FFXI will come out for the PS3. Since they have stopped hdd support for the PS2 already, there won't be additional people starting up. (Ever think why they stopped? Lack of sales and the release of the PS3 are the most likely reasons. Only thing that baffles me is that I think SE was counting on Sony releasing the system with a hd or a hd at the same time. Sony has now nixed that and this has probably thrown a wrench into SE's outlook.) So no new PS2'ers and many of them buying a new system within the first 6-8 months.... This certainly dwindles the amount of people playing on the PS2. Also more people with a different console or no console could be buying a PS3 and you could hook them to FFXI. The draw of better graphics and richer content helps too. The outlook is for the PS2 crowd to diminish, they are already seeing to that. This is exactly what they want so when they discontinue support, it won't hit them that hard and they will rebound. So all in all, the PS2 is going to be gone. Like I said before the question is when.

As far as supporting the PS2, I think they will for a while. Definately with downloadable updates and disc releases remains to be seen. It's already difficult to find the PS2 CoP version since they have lower production or even halted production on it. (Easy way to get around this is to buy the CoP PC version and then find someone with the PS2 version and use their discs with the cd key from the PC version.) My guess is they will support the PS2 version for no more than 2 more years. Certainly long enough for the PS2 fanbase to dwindle significantly and then they can easily nix it.

Haven't you heard of the new Expansion "Treasures of Aht Urhgan" that will bre released at the same time, i guess, as the new xbox. There will be a new job, Blue Mage and there also is a video showing a blue mage using that fire breath from the lizards. Just check FFXI hompage^^

There is a new summon out called diablos for COP. And as far new job will be out in new expansion = blue mage. The new expansion will be out when xbox 360 comes out. But most likely Phoenix summon will show up sometime in new expansion after 3-8 months of release.
