I forget to say, nin/mage is not practical for most people, nor is it a tank.

First off, HQ equips for virtually everything are needed for just decent damage, as well as a lot of tools. This is insanely expensive--it probably should not be used for general leveling unless you are ungodly rich (some people are, and there is a nin/blm actively exping in my LS).

Second, this combo doesn't work well before lvl 51 when the elemental staffs are not equipable. Before then a shiruken nin/rng is likely more powerful.

And last, this setup is not viable for tanking. You can't keep shadows up and nuke non-stop, nor can a nin/mage spike hate without provoke. Either one or the other. However, it is a very potent DD with the right equipment and player. If someone meets these requirements, it is a very powerful job balanced in both defense and offense.

From the look of it, she was not tanking...she was just serving as a DD...any decent BLM could've done the job she was doing, only better.

It's not to say that a NIN/RDM can't be effective in their own way (I actually think that a Ninjitsu nuker is rather interesting), it's just that it's not what the vast majority of pickup parties expects a NIN to do. Like I've stated before, pretty much everyone nowadays expects a NIN to blink tank, and any tank without Provoke is a total party wipeout just waiting to happen. I've had enough experience with Provoke to recognize its vital role in directing hate control...I simply don't buy any arguments to the contrary.
With this kind of damage, there isn't any choice BUT to tank.
NIN/BLM is the same as NIN/RDM as someone said before, but look at this thread.

With this kind of damage, you don't have to worry about loosing hate. My friend on Ramuh tried NIN/BLM for a while, and whenever I would mention him everyone who knew him would say that he was the best tank they ever had. There really isn't a question about it.

a nin/blm or nin/rdm WILL lose hate and it will be hard to get the hate back without provoke. trust me on this one. in my screen shot, Aiame was the nin/rdm, I was the nin/war, and Triddy was the pld/war, although Aiame was doing great damage, Triddy was able to get hate from Aiame with just a simple provoke. what is a nin/mage gonna do when the SC does 1k dmg along with a blackmages 1k dmg magic burst? without provoke, constant 150 dmg from ninjutsu spells will not cause the hate spike needed to gain hate back that a provoke+warcry will give you...

At later levels, you'd get more resists. This is pretty important not to get these, as your tanking ability depends on resist rate. I guess you could never be lowest in the party as NIN/BLM.
I remember this is why my friend quit NIN/BLM. He got too many resists. Maybe he lost hate once and couldn't get it back because of resists He never told me.

ya I have to agree, a nin/mage is really a DD role which is what we use it for.

Knowing how to you that job is as important as the equips behind it.

We were only able to field a nin/blm that worked because we had 2 players. I already had the HQ elemental staffs from my mage job.

I'm also a lv 70 wood worker, I can make a bunch of the tools at cost. The nin was lv 50 goldsmith and alchemist so between the 2 of us, we had most of the requirements covered.

We got the pld to tank for hate holding but as a pure DD, nin/mages does very well post 51 with right set up. Very useful ability to have, being able to convert from tank to DD. A pld would never work in this fashion.

She did steal hate occassionally but vs a determined pld, it's not that easy to get agro. Which is why blm's love pld I guess XD

The only job that I have ever seen act as both tank and DD are bst pets. Those things have the pure HP and attacking power to do both, but you can't heal them very well and they kind of suck at agro control vs super nuke loving blm's but they come pretty close.

Get 4 bst + pets and you have all the tanking and DD you need.

6 bst + pets is enough to take down fenrir and even provmions. Mass of bst can even take down tiamat.

I was about to say, if your friend quit NIN/BLM, then obviously it couldn't have been that great of a tanking combination.

Anyway, after my first post on the subject, I had my own encounter with a ninjitsu nuker. Very interesting, respectable damage, but BLM mains still do the job much better, IMHO.
