My general beef with the Elvaan race

First, allow me to say that I'm Elvaan, and I wouldn't have it any other way. That said, I feel that as a race, we were slapped together, given the leftover stats that no other race excelled in.

First of all, there's the STR. We have it, and we have tons of it. The problem? All the strength in the world doesn't matter if you don't hit. That's fine, and there should be a balance, so as not to make one race too powerful, but we have the absolute WORST DEX. The two stats are completely opposing one another, it doesn't make much sense, but I'm sure it's been complained about plenty.

Second good stat is MND. Great, we are good at White Magic. That would be just spectacular, if we didn't have the 2nd worst MP. Again, the two stats seem to go against each other.

Galka get HP and VIT, which go hand in hand. Mithra get DEX and AGI, Taru get MP and INT, so why do we get STR and MND? The only job that comes even close to using both of these stats is Paladin, and in which case we still desperately need the MP which we so horribly lack.

Alright, everyone can move along now, I'm done ranting.

Source of my rant was essentially comes from the fact that Mithra are naturally better then Elvaan at pretty much every job save Paladin. ;_; May the flames ensue.

the NA plds needs to realize to use a sword and shield instead of.... earthstaff

Go ahead and keep thinking that.

Elvaan are an outstanding melee and hybrid job race. You're slappin yourself in the face if you think your 2 or so dex behind every other race is killing you.

If someone is outperforming you, it's because they have better gear. (This goes with most races/classes.)

It's a bit more then a couple points in most cases, and I think we can all agree even a little bit makes a difference when it comes to this game.

once you're wearing hauberk, thick, sniper rings, and optical hat... dex doesn't make one damn bit of difference.

Once you get past Lv55 DEX wont do anything for anyone and STR will be better.

Those stat advantages (not hp/mp) are small at the end game, maybe 1-2% of a difference. Below 30 you can see the difference between the a race with the highest of one stat versus one with the worst, though things are still pretty easy to hit/nuke, so no worries. It only comes into play after you max out with all the equips you can get that this small difference comes into play, which multiplies the difference into a more tangible feel.

e.g. No matter what I do, my hume drk can't hit as hard as an elvaan while our acc and equip are very similar.

Elvaan and Galka play almost the same, it's just that Elvaan have quite a bit more MP, which I think makes Elvaan the more flexible race--better overall.

The only thing I have to say Elvaan suck at is playing thf, since the amount of dex you have directly influences a thief's damage. Sort of the way str directly influences monk's effectiveness and makes Elvaan very good at that job.

Well this is the delicate job of balancing a MMO between different races and the jobs. I think Squeanix has done a fantastic job at balancing the races/jobs in FFXI and because of the ability to add status enhancing items it allows for a great deal of flexability.

As an Elvaan Paladin I like the extra Mnd so I can get more out of my casting, like Flash and the occasional Banish II (which usually makes the White Mages laugh), and as long as I've got a Red Mage to back me up with Refresh I'm almost self-sustaining when I've got good damage support to take down a mob quickly. And yeah, my Dex sucks and when I'm fighting crabs I'm lucky to hit for more than 10 when I've got Defender on, and the weak Agility is made up with the exceptional Vitality when I take the hits.

It's funny because I wished I was an elvaan or galka so I had a surplus of a useful combat stat like str instead of the vaguely-semi-useful-perhaps-kinda-sorta-we-can't-prove-it-but we-assume-it's-good dex.

That is why Elvaan are THE BEST. Galka look rediculous in ANY kind of armor they wear. Elvaan pimp anything out, even the level 1 bondage armor with kung fu butt grip.
