  • Subbing ninja?...

So I was wondering what jobs would be acceptable to sub ninja to....

I basically want to duel wield, and don't care so much about using the ninjutsu...I just wanna duel wield swords...lol...Getting sick of DRK's 2 hand weapons.

I know that THF and RNG are acceptable...but Im not sure I really wanna play a THF, and I dont wanna spend so much on NIN main so....what can I do?'

Would Rdm/Nin be acceptable?....Drk/Nin?....Nin/Thf to deal damage and not tank?....

I don't care if it is somewhat frowned upon, I'll get over it...I just want something that can slightly work....can Rdm/Nin slightly work?

You'll hear a lot of "rdm/nin sucks" talk on almost every FFXI board out there.

Now, granted, the elemental-weaken ninjitsu is basically the only way for low-level parties to pull it off (after 50, you can just ask your BLM to waste half his MP on it instead :p), and it gives a slight boost to SC/MB damage... and it plays to RDM's strong point at low levels, which is enfeebling. However:

      (1) Subjob-only skills (Summoning for /smn, Ninjitsu for /nin, Singing for /brd) are gimped, as everyone should already know.
      (2) Beyond this gimped-ness, the only thing /nin brings to the table is Dual Wield, and if you're doing rdm/nin, you should have a SHIELD in your off-hand, not another weapon, because rdm/nin does exactly one thing well:
      (3) Mass-resistance tanking. Utsusemi + Stoneskin + Phalanx + Protect II/III = "hello, I'm a damage sponge now". By using Utsusemi rather than Blink, you save a little extra MP and possibly make it so that throwing a Yagudo Drink every 2-3 cycles you're not getting hit too badly in the MP department (when you run out of MP, you damn well better hope someone can backup tank for long enough for you to regain a fair amount of MP). This version of a tank is kind of ghetto, though - if you have to do it regularly, you should seriously look into leveling both Paladin and Warrior and be a REAL tank.

And as far as job combos that "slightly work", hell, mnk/rdm "slightly works" (it "slightly works" better than rdm/nin, in fact :p) but it doesn't get invites either.

Rdm/Nin works fine, I've partied with one. Red mages don't tank, so they don't NEED a shield, and two swords make it easier to do damage.

You'd want your enfeebling skills to be as high as possible so people won't focus too much on the swords. A lot of people don't think Rdm/Nin would work, even though it does.

RDM/NIN is workable in a way, I guess? Dual wand gives you double bonus from wands... I wouldn't expect RDM to tank or to melee, so I won't bother with dual swords or whatever; I don't look for RDM when I need more melee, I look for proper melee, RDM is a mage to me. You do lose the spells and skills from mages, so unless you can cover up the lose with skill, I wouldn't suggest doing RDM/NIN.
And people won't like RDM/NIN anyway...had a RDM/NIN in my party once, and the whole party went: 'RDM/NIN!? asked if he has other sub!?' which he was pissed because everyone dislike his choice...

DRK/NIN is wasting DRK's 2-handed weapon skill, they don't have a high cap for 1-handed weapon as far as I know.
THF/NIN isn't that great to me, THF's weakness is STR, they have enough agi/dex to land a hit, and hitting harder per hit is better than hitting 1's or 0's twice... As for dual wield adding hits to WS, I doubt knife+knife gives an extra hit in knife WS; for NIN, katana+sword gives you an extra hit in Blade: Retsu, but not katana+katana; but people could test that if they want.

If you really want to /NIN, WAR/NIN is an option, a blink tank with better damage sorta. Or RNG/NIN, dual wield archer knife, utsusemi whenever you can, for luring or when you get unwanted hate in battles.

Why dual wield swords when you can dual wield axes and look 10 times cooler.

I know many RDM/NIN and all of them quit /NIN and used a real sub after about 45.

I wasn't saying it was a good job combo, necessarily, just how to best make it work and possibly giving people who don't ever hear an explanation of WHY rdm/nin isn't a good combo (just that it sucks and anyone who uses it should be strung up by their toes until they use a "real sub") a chance to hear why they probably shouldn't be doing it (namely, its best function doesn't play to the strong points of either RDM or NIN).

RDM/NIN is acceptable only past level 74 and only when you are hunting weak ass HNMs like Roc, Simurgh, Serket, Lumberjack, Cassie, etc

                  CoP/Zilart/San/Win Finished, Bastok 1-1

And 20-29. The MP you get from a sub then is minimal, and you get a lot bigger INT/MND stat boost dual wielding wands.

Though it really falls behind at 30 when you compare ninjitsu that probably won't land V.S. Elemental Seal and/or Divine Seal.

And other highly farmable NMs, like King Arthro and Aquarius, from what I've heard :p

Seriously, this kind of post is what I was trying to avoid seeing in the thread and is WHY I MADE AS LONG OF A POST AS I DID THE FIRST TIME.

i think a rdm/nin would be good up to a certain extent.

i mean, say u doing distortion, just b4, the rdm/nin casts ninjutisu that lowers mobs ice resistance. da da they do SC, and blm gets it with blizzard type spell, im sure if the ninjutisu stuck, u would see some noticably higher damage from the blizzard type spell.

but yeah, like i said, to a certain extent. i could see them working very very good for farming reg shit. and i could see them doing awsome at 74+ when they get utsusemi ni, im sure they could solo most any super easy HNM

will people get that rdm/nin is only used 4 soloing!? rdm/nin is almost as good 4 soloin as a bst, only becus of utsumi ichi and ni, rdm/nin is not good 4 partys but is used to solo alot better. Think about it. blaze spikes+blink+utsumi ichi+en spell+protect()+phalanx+stoneskin+regen+duel weild=A SOLOER

                            WAR/NIN
                            THF/NIN
                            RNG/NIN

RDM/NIN is used for soloing only. In party play you will sub WHM or BLM. RDM/NIN is probably the strongest solo class in the game at level 74.
