Well duh, at lv23 NIN doesn't have the Utsusemi: NI yet, so duo tanking works best.

Sidewinder is not a 1 hit WS, it uses 1 ammo shot that does 4 damage hits. Barrage also does 4-6 hits but it uses ammo for each shot.

      EDIT:

As far as tanks and such. SE's original design for NIN was they were suppose to be damage dealers, out of a fluke with the design of Utsusemi they became viable tanks instead.

You can still see their DD origin when you look at their throwing items, their ninja stars are capable of outdoing a RNG if the RNG never uses Barrage or Sidewinder (or if the NIN uses the stars consistently). Of course using those constantly and you'll go through gil extreemly quick.

The NINs initial intended design for Utsusemi was to allow them to be quasi-tanks that can take hate fairly quickly in emergencies. Of course though it didn't turn out that way.

Which of the two is better? I don't think either one beats the other, they are both fairly situational as it seems right now. A PLD has a set of monsters that they do great against and the NIN has a set of monsters that they do great in.

It is a 1 hit WS but its multiplier is very high, I believe X5, which is why it does so much dmg.
If it hit four times you would see a large variance in damage for each WS, and you would most likely not completely miss it. Also, you would get 4 hits worth of TP back if it was a 4 hit WS, which you do not.

        • I hate leveling Nin but it makes such a great sub job.

          • i ended up skipping a lot of this thread, but had to post.

it seems like a lot of people on here have played in some bad pt's and blame it on the pld. in a bad party of course nin is better. the dd's wont do enough damage to pull hate off it, so theres no healing and nin makes up for downtime that a pld would have had.

in a good pt, pld is much better. dd's dont have to hold back with a pld. in a good party, fights should be short and sweet. dd's can go all out without pld using hate. good parties should have no downtime period. no downtime inbetween chains, no downtime whatsoever. mages should only be resting while the puller is looking for a mob. a good party can keep going multiple chains, if not forever, without having to wait for rest. i dont even remember the last time i rested as pld in an exp party. if your party has downtime, its either set up bad, someone is gimp or you're not lvl'ing in a good area. had a pt the other day (pld, whm, rdm, thf, drg, blm) we went for about 4 hours straight with nonstop pulling.

one member of my LS who has a 75whm used to love nin's. now his blm is in the 60's and he refuses to party with them. another whm had a pt with a main tank nin for the first time one night. said it was pretty cool, very very rarely healed the nin, but then again blm seemed like main tank lol. unless you have all the gil in the world and can spam shurikens and ninjitsu, you cant hold hate like a pld, maybe even with the shurikens you might still not hold hate like a pld. thats the essence of the job.

            • Ninjas can avoid the loss of hate through taking damage but they can't out-hate their party members unless they're beating the gradual loss of hate over time. For a ninja I'd say Agi is just as important as Str.

When I tank as a Pld I can cure myself every now and again and keep hate easily. If I start to lose too much hate I can cast Cure II and bring it all back. I find it's best to use Cure once or twice between Provokes to maintain the hate.
