  • Elvaan...then what?

I've got FFXI pre-ordered, and im trying to plan my character. I was going to do Samurai as a Sub, since Elvaan make good Swordsmen and such, but now im hearing that till level 30 they suck, and after 60 they suck. So...that sucks.

Im thinking of starting as a Warrior, since Elvaan make good fighters, but I heard that they arent half-bad mages and im kind of interested in the Black Mage Class, and I dont want to be a Red Mage because despite looking cool, I heard that they suck and are basically a weak Warrior with some weak spells.

    Monk sounds cool, iunno.

    Argh, somebody help me out.

try them all, not like u have to completely loose your character to do it, just change jobs and mess around, i have like 8 jobs at lvl 10 before i took bard to 55

I too am getting the game on ps2 launch. Although I haven't played yet, I'll try to answer your questions based on what I have been reading up on.

Well, samurai is usually subbed after the chracter's main is at lvl 30. This is because at level 30 SAM gets Meditate. This skill allows for quick TP and is the main reason poeple sub SAM. Elvaan are no better with swords than any other race, how good you are with a weapon type depends soley on which class you are.

With their high strength, vitality, and HP, Elvaan make great warriors as well as most other melee jobs. They don't make the best mage type though. Low MP and intelligence really hurt Elvaan when playing a mage type. Red mages are a great and sought out class, especially at higher levels. They get usefull abilities and spells such as Fast Cast, Refresh (regens MP), Dispel (cancels an enemy's buff), Phalanx (adds LOTS ofdefense to self), Convert (swaps HP to MP), the en- line (adds elemental damage to melee) and mant white/black spells.

Try to read up on each class some, it really helps to get a better idea of what each 1 is like. I am sure there are others who could reply better and more informed, but I hope this helps.

you were sorta right about hte sam thing, sam is usually subbed at 60xxx/30sam so that u can use mediate. however from a subjob mediate only gives you about 60% tp as opposed to the 100 it gives as a mainjob

First off elvaan mages suck. The only mage job you would be ok at is Whitemage due to high mind. But it doesnt make up for your EXTREME lack of mp. elvaans have second lowest mp. As for BLM. very low INT.

Elvaan are ok melee. Highest str, second highest HP and VIT. Very low DEX and AGI. I would suggest you start as a warrior. Make sure you use greataxe. DONT use a spear or a scythe.. lol.

As for ADV ive yet to play sam as my elvaan. However elvaan so far makes a great paladin. RSE makes up for lack of mp n such. And DRG is pretty fun as an elvaan also. I would suggest playing all the jobs al il bit till you come to something you really like. Just because a job isnt right for your race doesnt mean its not doable.. However you may get less invites for it later...

BLM is the worst job for Elvaan, because of the INT and relatively low MP. You would make an OK RDM or WHM (a good one if you play it right), but you'd be much better with melee classes.

You sure you want to be Elvaan? To me it sounds like Hume may be best for you, since you are kind of going all over the place in terms of jobs. But it is solely your choice.

My suggestion: play what you want. If you're not having fun by lvl 15 (or 20 for thf, since it doesn't get good until 15), then move on to another class.

Im not even going to dignify what Massecre said with a response.

As for the rest of you, thank you for your advice. I might just do Warrior, I was just curious as to what Elvaan are best at. You've helped me out a lot.

samurai don't suck, you'll find as you play alot of classes go through 'rough patches' in certain level ranges.

i would say that: play warrior to 18 and get your subjob quest done. Then level monk a little. Now you can return to warrior and head onto level 30 where you get alot of choices:

samurai, dragoon, paladin, dark knight and ranger will all work well with your warrior as a sub-job.

hell who knows, maybe you'll get hooked on monk, or mabye you'll level all classes to level 3 and hate them all TT

                    heh just play around ><
