These are Elves from Japanese lore.

Hmm. The Manga/Show/CCG 'YuGIOh' comes to mind. Remember the card 'Evlen Swordsman'? (ENG: Celtic Guardian). He was ripped =\

Heh for the love of god somehow this thread turned into a discussion of fantasy elves. I'm not an expect on fantasy, as it occurred to me that I was in fact referring to the D&D elves, but the logic behind my statement remains...

Let me use a different analogy then. The F-14 Tomcat and the Boeing 747 are both planes. Would an airliner buy a fleet of F-14's, and would the Navy use 747's for combat? B...but they're both planes! How could they not be used interchangably?! Whether or not Elvaan are based on Elves is besides the point. They have their own set of stats, and their own traits, so just because elves in other settings/stories may be good at magic or be lithe and charismatic characters, does not imply the Elvaan will be.

thats my point=P elvaan are not the default fantasy type elves as EQ, D&D, Really any game sofar has put them, but are instead much more in line with tolkien elves=P

Where did the designers come from when makeing them that way? Who knows. Im not saying they are based on tolkien, im just saying that they are the most tolkien-ish of any game elves i have yet encounterd, hence anyone who wanted to play a tolkien-like elf would probibly find a much more accomidateing elf in ffxi than in another game.

Elvaan = Tolkein Elves + the French

          Yea, I hate em.

Obsidian, that made no sense. People on this thread just spent the last dozen posts explaining how the Elvaan of FFXI are in no way related to Tolkien's creations.

And because they have a monarchy, they are automatically French? Come on, I hate the French as much as the next guy, but get your head out your ass!

I am not an expert, but wanted to introduce a few observations.

LOTR Elves had very good eyesite, as demonstrated by the 2nd movie when the Elf was asked "What do your elf eyes see" (or something to that effect). I would like to add hearing, as an elf once said that he could shoot the dwarf in the dark because he was so loud... but oh well.

They had very good accuracy and dexterity, and that is shown by their excessive use of the bow and arrow...

They have very good agility, as shown in the all movies at some point or other.

                _____________

Now, looking at the Elves in FFXI... I say.. HUH?!

                Strength over Dexterity.
                Agility?

No mention of passive abilities such as sight or hearing...
                So... I say again... HUH?!

                _____________

As an extra input, I would like to say that the race differences in FFXI are realy not extensive as they could/should have been.

I think that differences to passive abilities (hearing and sight in the woods (Elf?), hearing and sight in the mines and caves (Galka?), and many others could have been implemented. Much like the ones seen in NeverWinter Nights...

                but that is only opinion...
