  • Newbie Question: Skillchain

I am a Level 9 Warrior...for now young one.... I see "Skillchain" being thrown around like Cheap Strumpet. I read the little manual that came with the game, and poured over numerous posts and FFXI sites. I need to make sure I'm getting the correct start here fellow Questers.

Can I use a skillchain at my current Level?
Is that "Fast Slice" attack that I've used a skill chain?
How do I level up to gain more?
At what level will I be able to see more aggressive attacks?

Using skillchains (renkei) may seem a little difficult at first, but you will get the hang of it. Pretty much this is how you do it. First you have to get a renkei order. Someone in your group may have a chart or may know of a renkei. Since you are only lvl 9-10, your options on renkei combos are going to be very limited. Anyway, next determine who goes first. The only combo i can think of off the top of my head is raging axe (one hand axe skill) ------> fast blade (one hand sword skill). Ok, since you have fast blade you are going second. When you both have 100+ TP you can do the renkei. The first guy will use raging axe, then you will wait approx. three seconds and then use fast blade. Timing is what makes these work. When you see "so and so readies Raging Axe", or right when you see the animation for the weapon skill, that is when you start counting. Count to three, and on three is when you push your macro for fast blade. If you don't have a macro heres one you can use.
    /ws "Fast Blade" <t>

You will know you did it right if you see a cool animation after you use fast blade, and it will say skillchain: scission in the log.Thats it. As far as getting more weapon skills, you will get more when you get to higher lvls, and the renkei chart will open up more. Same thing goes for the more powerful attacks, the usually get better as you increase in lvl too. If you want to have a renkei chart for yourself, go to search at the top of this sites home page and type in renkei chart in the search. Some threads should pop up containing links to charts.

"Fast Slice" is called a Weapon Skill. Skillchains occur when multiple weapon skills are done in the right order and right combinations. They can be done at any level as long as you have a weapon skill available to you.

Which weapon skills you get depend on your weapon skill level and your class. When you use a weapon your weapon's skill goes up. Check Status->Combat Skills for a list of your current skills.

Weapon skills become available when you reach a certain skill. Your weapon's combat skill is capped based on your level and your job. So at some point during a level you will often reach your maximum combat skill for that weapon. So leveling your job is indirectly involved, but only to raise your skill cap. You can be level 75 in a job and still have a skill of 0 in some weapons.

Different jobs are better with certain weapons. This is reflected in your skill caps. For a Monk Hand-to-Hand weapons have higher skill caps than say other weapons they can use. That doesn't mean you always limit yourself to one weapon. A warrior is reasonable with most weapons they can use (but 2H Axes are best) and should level several weapon skills.

Another method of doing it is to have your maro time it for you.

        eg.

        /wait 3
        /p Executing Fast Blade!
        /ws "Fast Blade"

Just immediately activate this macro when you see the "xxx readies -----" message. I find this one easier to use since my humanly timing ability varies wildly depending on how sleepy I am.

Now thats odd everyone is saying wait but I have noticed that at least in my pt's it dosnt seem that you actually have to wait the 3 secs as lon as it comes in the proper order it can be as short as only 1 sec. Can anyone back this up? It just seems that I have never missed the skillchain cuz I am fast on the draw...

Its about 3 seconds. Just count to 3, and on three hit ur macro. One second is definitely too short. And of course you have to do it in the right order, thats how you get the skillchain in the first place.

Im more used to wait and see when the animation of the last WS ends then I use my weapon skill.

But since I become dragoon I havnt really needed to time it, Im always first in skillchains

                  Important tip on skillchains:

-You need to consider the element the skillchain have
(for example, since crabs and pugs are weak to fire, it is better to use Liquefaction and/or Fusion)

-If some1 miss a weapon skill, the chain is broken (so save ur TP if ur going next!)

-also always know what kind of spells ur blk mages can cast
(If ur blk mage knows Fire, u might want to use Liquefaction and/or Fusion for a magic burst)
