  • The Tank's Dilemma

So here's the deal. A few friends and myself are currently planning our starting party for FFXI's Oct. 29th release. I will be the designated tank of the party as the rest consists of a thief, monk and white mage or two.

This leads me to my question. What would be the best tank combo? As of now I was thinking DRK/SAM or SAM/WAR. Not really sure which would be better.

If you want to know the rest of the party's classes and whatnot I'd be glad to list them.

Neither drk/sam or sam/war would be good at tanking.. but if your set on doing those job combos sam/war would be WAY better than drk/sam. Drk have VERY low def, just a little better than a magic using class, and both drk and sam are advanced jobs so you can't pick them when you start out.

But anyways if you are serious about tanking you should really be a pld/war, NOTHING is better than that combo for taking damage.

Well hope i was helpful ...

Well the best Tanking class will be Paladin/Warrior. If your looking something different you can try Monk/Warrior.

A Tanker can be better with Taunt.

I was in a PT with a NIN/WAR two days ago, who acting as a tanker. He used Blink ninjutsu (evade all magic/attack for a few turns) every minute and it made him an awesome tanker. He wasn't taking any damage at all, and the white mage looked like he was going to fall asleep since he didn't have to heal anybody (at the end of battle he would have only used 50 MP or so.) My opinion on Ninjas really changed after seeing that. I'd have to say if you can find a ninja willing to spend a ton of money on ninjutsu bags, then NIN/WAR is definitely a good tank. I think what made the party even twice as better was the fact that we had a summoner using Garuda's mass-PT Blink and Titan's mass-PT Stoneskin ability so nobody else was taking hits if the monster started hitting somebody else, but, that's beside the point.

The only difference between a NIN and a PLD is that the latter will be able to keep hate much easier than a NIN thanks to being able to cast Cure, plus they have a very useful two hour ability as well as the Shield/Cover ability.)

          PLD/WAR, eh?

How much less effective would SAM/WAR be than this?

Sam/war wouldnt be a big step down from the Pal/war. Nin/War can work too, but its by using blink. You have to have warrior as sub though to be a true tank, and the best job is Paladin. And the best race is Galka
