  • Guide: Melee stats for dummies.

    There's way too many people that don't know what stats do or how they work so I've decided to put together an all-encompassing guide. The purpose of this thread is to teach you what every melee stat does, how melee damage is calculated, and, eventually, how to compare stats so you can judge equipment on your own. Most importantly, the guide is meant to be easily understandable.

    The math behind all of this is simple. Only basic algebra is needed to understand it. If you don't understand something then I'm doing something wrong and I demand that you tell me what you're not getting so I can fix the guide. You're only hurting yourself and others by keeping quiet about it.

    May just be me, but clicking spoilers for 1 and 2 do not work for some reason. Tried it on both Firefox and IE.

            I think it may be having spoilers inside spoilers that's breaking them. Let's do a quick test.

            Can anyone open that spoiler box?

            I doubt it's character count since part II is shorter than the boxes I used in my PLD equipment guide.

              Great to have this all together in one place.

              Your overall normal swing damage per unit time will be your number of attacks (a function of haste, double/triple attack and multihit weapons) times your accuracy percentage (including Zanshin if you have it) times your average damage per hit (averaging in critical hits at the rate you actually get them). So if one of those factors is lacking, you can gain more by improving the neglected area; each one alone has diminishing returns if you focus on it to the exclusion of the others.

              Weaponskills are more complicated, and bring in the concept of gear-swapping strategies. Presumably that will be addressed in another post (or thread).

                Yeah, originally I was going to post an all-inclusive formula I developed that includes everything from DPS to crits but I figured it would fly over too many people's heads, so I decided to preface that with a full guide that addresses everything that appears in that formula.

                It'll take me a little while but I'll touch upon all of that eventually.

                    I didn't get that one to work either. Its just strange to me that 3 works but none of the others do for me.

                      That spoiler box had something in common with the first two in the OP - it had a second spoiler box in it. It seems like that doesn't sit well with some people's PCs or browsers. It's a damned shame because it was really helping me keep the thread content neat by keeping all the finer details inside their own spoiler boxes, but it looks like I'll have to reformat the guide.

                        I'm trying to find the Haste chart I once saw on Blue Gartr for you... it was very well done and displays exactly how haste progresses as you tack on more.


                        But from what I recall (and for easy reference) the intervals are something like this;

                        0-24% steady, slow progression in attack speed but not that noticeable early on

                        25% You should attack at roughly 1.5 times normal speed.

                        50% You are now attacking twice as often as you normally would

                        66% Three times attack speed

                        80% (the cap, formerly 90) 5 times attack speed, and extremely difficult to reach for most jobs (if not impossible).

                        *90% Is no longer possible, but during the time it was you would swing a staggering ten times faster. This was only possible with Apocalypse Wielding Dark Knights and was a sight to behold >.> but SE nerfed it for obvious reasons.

                          Actually x1.5 swings is 33.33% Haste. 25% is x1.333 swings. The numbers can be figured out with the Haste Factor formula I posted. Was considering posting a table like that but considering all that I have to cover with this guide I didn't want to clutter it up too much.

                          EDIT: Replaced the internal spoiler blocks in the OP with quote blocks. Do they work now?
