  • DRG sub job?! which is the best !

    Hi Guys,

I have started leveling my dragoon, and now my dragoon's lvl is 48. And now I have a question, which is the best sub job for dragoon in doing massive damage?!

    DRG/WAR?
    DRG/THF?
    DRG/SAM?

As I started to level my dragoon by /war! However as the level goes up, parties will requires different sj.!!!

/thf, SATA + Penta Thrust create perfect damage?
    /war - provoke?
/sam - (i haven't try it yet, no idea what is the damage deal's like)

Thanks in advance for the advise!!

I do hope my question make sense to everyone xD

    Wrong forum.

/THF's SA only stacks on the first hit of Penta-Thrust.

/WAR has Berzerk, Warcry and Attack Bonus to benefit from in the long run. Provoke is for setting up SATA for THFs when that happens.

/SAM is all about Store TP, Meditate and the +5 STR and Haste effect from Hasso.

Overall /WAR and /SAM bring better DOT than /THF. It hard to line up SATA these days and THF only brings small spike damage to DRG's best weaponskills.

      Cough.../NIN...cough...

Now I realize that your looking to increase damage output but that's not what your problem will be later on. There are quite a few situations you'll run into including some types of XP mobs that you just really want shadows to prevent death. Remember, being dead drops your damage output to 0. The most common situation for this is when you have mobs with nasty AoE that is absorbed by shadows especially mobs that spam AoE moves (Limbus mobs have a fondness for this type of attack). Now remember, you can use /SAM's Seigan/Third Eye to absorb direct melee attacks when you take hate, but Third Eye doesn't work on certain TP moves (generally AoE ones) and never works on spells, so if you get caught in a Blizzard IV spell, your ability to see it coming won't do squat to prevent the damage from it.

In most XP situations, you can use /SAM instead. However, with Puks, you might want to go /NIN because of their annoying shadow-absorbed TP moves. Hasso's haste benefits significantly from a Haste build but remember, Hasso is only 5% Haste and it takes quite a bit of Haste from other sources to push that to the point where it translates into a damage increase greater than the 10% provided by Double Attack. Zanshin gives you a little boost, but if you're running at 95% Accuracy (which DRGs often do with their Accuracy Bonus II), it's effect is minimalized.

/THF allows you to redirect some of your hate onto the tank, but has absolutely no defensive capabilities for you. You encounter problems similar to the ones mages run into when they don't sub /WHM or /RDM for Blink/Stoneskin (/SCH is an attractive proposition for efficiency and breadth of spell knowledge, but it can't protect you under fire).

/WAR's extra damage has a similar effect to the piercing weakness and combining the two by fighting flying mobs with /WAR might push your damage higher than tanks can manage especially if you're well-geared or have merits. /WAR does provide a bit more defensive cushion than /THF though.

        Couple of things.

Wasn't there some debate about SA making multi hit WS 100% accurate as well?

        Hasso is 10% haste.

And I thought that shadows got wiped and you'd take AoE damage regardless of Utsusemi or Seigan+TE.

And in general I'd recommend Drg/Sam over Drg/War. I like the store TP traits, they let me get to 100% TP quicker (although Double Attack does as well) But /sam's Meditate, Hasso, Seigan+TE and Zanshin for when I do miss trumps Berserk, DA, Defender, and Warcry.

You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be misqouted and then used against you.

I don't have a big ego, it just has a large mouth.

It'd be cool if we had a forum just for discussion and questions about the DRG job. Oh wait...
Dragoon - Final Fantasy XI :: Dreams in Vana'diel :: Community

There's even a subjob thread in there already... that you replied to.

All 3 subjobs you mentioned can be useful in various situations. So can the site's search functions.

MB I confused the +5 STR with +5% Haste. This means that, in most cases, operating Hasso on /SAM is going to net you better returns than /WAR's Double Attack especially if you consider than Zanshin is cleaning up 10% of your misses. I don't know how this works with virtue weapons, but DRG's virtue weapon is not that great anyway (I assume, you get just your regular extra attack from DA and then another from the Virtue stone proc, but you can't proc DA on Virtue Stone proc).

Not in all cases. Seigan is untouched by AoE effects entirely. Some attacks (like Puks Wind Shear ability) only use up some shadows. Wind Shear specifically uses 2-3 shadows at random. If there are any "hits" left over when your Utsusemi goes down, you get knocked back otherwise you stay put. There are quite a few attacks like this, but -ga magic and most "magical" AoE attacks cancel all shadows and are unaffected by them. Therefore against AoE magic mobs, you'd do better with /SAM since your shadows aren't going to help at all. Against physical AoE mobs, shadows might be helpful, but it's highly mob-specific.

Re: DRG sub job?! which is the best !

something to consider say once you hit lvl 60. you may want to level a mage sub. i had whm sub leveled from beginning, but rdm or blu can be used as well. now if all your going for is max damage then war. dot probaly sam. but if you want the best partys of your life from 60 to end game level a mage sub. best exp partys i was ever in was 5 drg/mage + brd/nin. healing breath partys are unreal exp if you have enough mobs. chains that just dont ever stop well into the 100+ chains and thats not just on colibris but anything you exp on. colibris are the best, you just have the brd line them up likes 737s at O'Hare intl airport and wear them out. ive only had 1 party ask me to specifically use a melee sub and they wanted /sam, which i have not leveled. the leader even went so far as sending a tell they didnt need me if i didnt have /sam, if he was of that mind set i didnt want to be in his party anyways. for hate control /nin is useful if tank cant hold hate which is very common on colibris. youll learn to back off weapon skills until 3/4 dead bird.
as for damage numbers i dont have a parse of what they are for different subs but i have seen 1800 penta on colibris /whm. i did see a /blu elvann do 1900+ in same party but his gear was mostly rare/ex. most normal exp partys ive been in, even /whm sub, i had to watch my damage output to keep from taking to hate. i would hate to think what would happen with /war if it was much higher, i being a taru, would probaly not survive.
