There are different timers depending on the length of the chain, and also your level. You get more time as you level up, and less time for successive chains. Look here for a good explanation and timer charts:

just so ppl won't be mislead, as it's stated in the linked page's timer chart, players' lvl has nothing to do w/ the length of time under which u have to kill the next mob to get exp chain; it's the mob's lvl that determines it.
