  • Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

I'm kind of walking the line on this one... sometimes it bugs me being /check 'ed and other times I don't even pay attention to it. I didn't know about the chat filter... now that I do, I'll probably just use it. :-) When I do occasionally get bugged about it I have a macro that goes something like this:
/em feels <t>'s intense gaze and returns it.
    /wait 1
    /check <t>

Not that I actually even look at what they have.. more just to return the /check.

Lol.. Once when I used that macro the person turned around, ran back to me and /slap 'ed me! I laughed so hard I couldn't resist sending them a /tell <t> ROFL!! They, of course, had nothing to say... Just went on their way.

That brings up an interesting point ... how many of you, whenever you get checked, go and check the person back? I find myself doing this sometimes because I want to know who's checking me.

I also check people with the "?" by their name because you can't see if they have a bazaar up, the "?" shows instead. This has resulted in a few /tells asking, "Can you help me?"

I usually find myself checking those who do check me, and for same reason you stated.

I never check anyone unless they have a bazaar. I guess I'm just not curious.

I check people all the time, to see what equipment they use for their job and level, or if they have a piece of equipment I haven't seen before.

There's something I can't quite figure out.....and I wanna see what you guys think.

I was walking around in jeuno in full AF blm gear. Nothing special, right?

A level 74 brd(did a /sea all on her) checks me, not really sure why, because my gear is nothing special and I'm not bazaaring.

A lot of people seem to check others as they run past, I guess so they have something to do while they're going somehwere. Happens to me mainly in when I run around in the wild and someone come by with a chocobo but sometimes in cities too.

I've done that while running around outside cities (checking someone while passing by), but it has been because at the time I was checking mobs (to see if I can skill up on them, if I can solo etc.) and people just happens to be in the way and gets checked by accident.

I think /checking is pretty much like when you are walking on the street and someone stares at you, sometimes you don't mind, others is annoying as hell, others it can be pleasent, like if the one checking you out is a pretty girl or your gf etc. etc.

I don't think it's rude, I mean how else are you going to see whther or not a person is qualified to be in your party?

Aside from that, checking in general isn't rude. I mean, I do it out of habit. It's not somthing I do consciously anymore. Whenever I see someone run by and I'm not busy: ((Click click, check, unclick, unclick)).

Why would it be rude anyways? I mean, show off your armor if you're proud of it. If you're not proud of it you should probably be embaressed. ((No, a shell earring at level 60 is NOT a fashion statement... the 90s are gone, man.))
"Oh, you ca'n't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're Mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be", said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Here's a little story for youse guys. I'd read what I could find about the game before I got it, and I remembered that some people thought being examined was rude. Within the first few days, I started seeing the "So-and-so examines you message," but I wasn't sure what triggered that. Somehow, I'd got it in my head that just targeting another player would give them that message. So anytime I was outside fighting, and accidentally targeted another player, I would run the other way and hope they weren't mad at me. I continued thinking this for quite a while before I'd accidentally targeted enough people who didn't get mad over it that I finally made the connection.

I did a /sea all on her after she checked me, because by that time I was curious about what level she was, and I didn't feel like letting her know I was checking her

But yeah, didn't really think about that. Maybe she was interested in becoming a blm and wanted to see what stats of the af gear that she could eventually obtain. Who knows?

I have always thought if your seeking, have bazar, in pt, in alliance, or in a linkshell with someone being checked is np @ all and no one should be bothered by that.

However, if your checked by some random person out of no where it is the equilvant of someone saying:

                              Who are you?
                              What level are you?
                              What gear ya got?

For no other reason then them just being nosey..... That can be annoying. You got to ask why they so worried about you that they just have to know what your level and gear is.

Come on, be honest when ya check some random person its because you see some armor or weapon that you just got to know what it is and instead of just asking them you have to check them.

Side note I do play alot @ JP prime hours and I rarely ever get checked. When I play @ NA hours I get checked offten.

I don't usually check people because of their equipment or level. I may check someone with /anon on to take a guess at their current job/level (or subjob too), but not because I necessarily see a new equipment/weapon on them. I do however usually /check people just randomly.
