Re: Checking others w/o asking? Rude or not?

I usually check for bazaars, when I see gear that I think is cool, and when I join a party. When I'm in a party, I see no reason why I shouldn't know what kind of gear my team has - wouldn't want a WHM wearing + STR rings or something.

I don't get mad when people check me. It's really no big deal to me.

my name is dalin and i am a repeat checker...

yeah... it really doesn't matter because you can't see the earings or capes or rings, and that is why i check so much.
it wasn't me... no wait... it was.

So let's say that you check the whm and he/she is wearing +str rings, what do you do?

But I agree with most people here, it is rude if done more than once, as well as when someone make a bad comment about an item piece of something.

            Double Post Edited:

Wait, so are you saying people know when they are being BListed and being taken off from it? I was never BListed by someone so I don't know. lol
Yeah, you can know if someone has blacklisted you or not. From what I've been told, you'll recieve an error of some sort when trying to send a /tell to someone who has /blisted you, at least with the December patch.

hey now... whm's can be nasty if built right and they have the right armour. when they get holy armour, sub nin. let the whm tank at that point... sure... they will die, but they may out last the pld

Having done the whole Whm/Nin with melee gear thing with some LS friends and some random strangers.. I personally:

Let them comment on my gear - wait for the inevitable comeback from my LS mates who know that I'm going to perform regardless of whether I'm doing what's expected or not and get on with whatever job I've been assigned or have assigned myself to. And leave my performance to prove whatever I was doing.

Checking someone is really a moot point. You can tell a person's performance off a couple of mobs regardless of knowing what their exact gear setup is. /Check lets us validate that.

Sometimes when someone checks me 9 times or more in an exp session it bugs me. One or two times.. no. Sometimes I've been asked: "Why am I wearing a Vagabond's Tunic?" while wearing a Garrison Tunica, or why I'm wearing Lizard Feet when wearing Leaping Boots - without them checking. Truthfully - I'd rather people check me, and think to themselves: "Oh.. he's not gimped, he's quite pimped" rather than assume I'm wearing something crappy that isn't commonplace. And save me the bother of trying to explain myself.

Sometimes I'll make odd gear choices too - for example: I'm levelling up a lowbie Warrior atm, and having spare funds, I'm using a Mighty/Vision ring combo, instead of a Courage Ring x2 combo. I like it. It works for me. People double take that a lot - presuming I'm wearing NQ stuff. Ok, so they have to double check it - but it makes sense in the end.

Mostly I'm in the really don't care category. I don't tend to check other people myself as - I've come to the conclusion that there will always be richer and poorer players than me, but as long as their brains are in the right place - they'll do what I'm expecting of them, and I'll do what they expect of me. Sometimes though - that rare piece of gear I don't see often - I just have to /check, just to see if it is really what I think it is.

I don't think it is rude, i check people all the time but not more than once. i don't care who checks me even more than once.

Usually, I'll just go on with the party, because if the WHM can still keep everyone alive and do his/her other duties, the rings are a moot point. Maybe he simply forgot to change them after a job change or something, who knows?

                      When that WHM with +STR rings runs up to the front and starts whacking away with his club, that's when I'd kick him. During skill-up parties that's all well and good, but xp? {No thanks.}

To me, checking the gear of people in my party lets me know of a potential red flag with that player. Sure, not all people with crappy gear are crappy players, but maybe from looking I can kind of guess what kind of player they'll be.

Although sometimes, no matter how "leet" your gear is, you still suck.

I like it better when my party members have bazaars. I'll check them, open their bazaar, "browse" for a few seconds, then stay in the check screen and poke around their equipment to my heart's content.

                        Being checked doesn't bother me.

Being checked more than twice does. I figure in two times, you've seen all you need to see. If you haven't, maybe you should stop closing windows so damned fast, eh?

The only time I get really pissy, though, is in situations like:

I'm skilling up my summon skill at the Rolanberry-Jeuno zone. Galka rides by me on a chocobo, stops suddenly and checks me. That's fine. People are curious. I've noticed I get checked more as summoner than I did as a white mage for some reason, especially by newbies. And, it doesn't bother me to be checked. But then he turns around, faces his character right at me, and checks me another two or three times. I stop summoning to make it clear I've noticed and turn and stare back at him for a few minutes. He finally rides off.

Multi-checking is rude in my opinion. Once, twice, like I said is fine. Sometimes you have to do a doubletake. But four times? I don't think so. Makes me wonder if they want something. I've been inclined to ask on a few occasions. Or say, 'Yes, I am indeed a summoner. Your eyes do not decieve you, good sir.'

Me, personally, I don't check anyone unless they ask me to, or if they have a bazaar. I'm just not inclined to.

Well sometimes I'm checking some person and I'll have to to Refresh or Dispel or something. So I'll recheck them afterwards.

They'll usually laugh and be like "Yeah, I know I'm cute," and only we'll get the joke while the pt continues on in obliviosity

But the check function is in the game for a reason.

I mean, it's in our main friggin menu, we can use it to compare ourselves to people of similar level, it can spur a conversation or argument over gear choices and it can get us wondering where that person got the gear from. It's very useful and doesn't hurt anyone.

If you don't like it, you can turn the filters on. Or just run around naked, I could care less. If I check someone and their equipment switches immediately, then I didn't need to see the gear that bad.

No one is so special that they can be blatant assholes like that.

Besides, you're not the only person with that gear.

Cheatt on my server runs around with his Star Cap, and he likely gets checked often (Star Cap was given to members of the winning Ballista teams last year at that event thing, so it is evidently very rare), as does the person who got that Maat's Cap.

But regardless, they're just bits of data that are given a visual representation via a game.

                          It doesn't make them special.

If the "Red Mage" can pull out a sword an swing at the mob, so can the "White Mage" except with a hammer.

I thought (past tense) you were within reason saying if as a Red Mage you did your duties you were fine to melee, but now I see you turn the other cheek.

Maybe I was wrong in believing that a Red Mage could multitask. By your analogy - if a White Mage can't - neither can you. Please reaffirm you're now booted (from party) status.

Well, the difference is the White Mage is responsible for keeping the party alive, and the Red Mage is not. Red Mage meleeing is also much more widely (though not completely) accepted than White Mage meleeing and everyone knows it. RDM meleeing might raise a few eyebrows, but WHM meleeing is going to be considered a noob in the first degree, and you can't deny that.

Now granted, I've said there are times when a RDM absolutely should not melee, and now that I've got my elemental staves in the mix I've found there's no real reason for me to melee anymore, as it has become too much of a hassle changing equipment.

I don't see why I should edit anything, though, because I stand by what I said. When's the last time you saw a WHM meleeing in a party that actually turned out to be worth a damn? I am an advocate for RDM melee, if only up until you get your staves, but since when was there ever a debate for WHM's meleeing? I thought it was common knowledge that WHM meleeing = noob who will get the party killed. Maybe a WHM can melee and do his duties. It's very easy to cast and fight, I do it all the time when soloing, and if for some reason it worked for the party (though why it would, I can't think of) then okay ... but not many parties are even going to give a meleeing WHM a chance. Even if there are no other WHMs seeking.

Anyway, I think your post was more than a little harsh. You're attacking me because I said that White Mages shouldn't melee? O.o Like I said, I thought that was common knowledge but I don't see what the big issue is. I don't think that saying RDMs can melee and WHMs can't is being hypocritical at all.
