  • Sub-Job Quest: Mahura vs Selbina

    Ok, I've got a question...

Why is it that I never hear of anyone doing the Sub-Job quest out of Mahura?

With everyone doing the one out of Selbina, there seems to be a large amount of competion over the ghoul skulls. From what I've heard, they're a pain to find because they're so rare. It seems there would be a lot less competition if people would do the one out of Mahura.

Is there some reason that people prefer to do the Selbina version of this quest?

well, the thing is for the selbina quest a party of lvl 18 people can kill a ghoul and get a magicked skull. However a group of lvl 18 people cannot kill a bogy and get the bloody robe. Most people then, do the selbina quest. However, if you are lucky enough to know some higher lvl people whou would be willing ot fight bogies with you until you get your drop, the Mahura quest is the way to go.

G1 I hate you more and more every day....

Yeah...I'm going out of my MIND trying to get a skull...just tonight the party I was with got 4 of them, but I had crap for luck and didn't get any of them for my lots (and a couple were given to the more helpful party members)...hopefully I can get one tomorrow with the same group...then I can get the hell out of there.

But yeah...I'd try Mhaura until enough people come to their senses and realize that there's WAY too many people doing the Selbina quest to make it worthwhile. :/

Mhaura's SJ quest is a considerable amount more difficult...

Ghouls aren't easy to locate consistently...
Bogies are near impossible to kill at 18...

the only alternative is to get some 25-30+ people to help out with those 2...

ghouls can be found in abundance in Gusgen mines, so if you could get some people to go down and kill some for fun, it'd be much smoother...

I've done two trips to Gusgen Mines for skulls...I've NEVER seen them drop...plus, the Ghouls there (particularly the scythe-wielding ones) are far stronger than the ones roaming around Valkurm Dunes.

For skulls, I would highly recommend the NW oasis in Dunes since you can get as many as 4 Ghoul spawns on a good night, and hopefully you'll get at least ONE skull from them. However, there are an alarming number of the mid-level Goblins there (Leecher/Mugger/Gambler), and I've noticed that an Earth Elemental will spawn every Firesday, which can be quite bad for magic-users since the Elemental will be drawn to their spells.

Personally, I'm either going to wait until my 30s before skull-hunting again, or I'm going to coerce some of the buddies I met at Dunes to help me get my skull (which shouldn't take too long since most of them got theirs already).

Wow, I musta been really lucky the other day then... I was with a group in the Valkrum Dunes hunting one of the Oasis areas. We were hunting Snippers for XP and looking for Ghouls at night. I found a ghoul (the only one I saw during the time we were hunting there) and it dropped a skull. I also managed to get the lot for it. Now I'm Lv 18 and working on Levelin up Subjobs.

I feel kinda bad about getting one so easily after hearing about all these other people who have worked so hard to find one and gotten nothing....

What I'm curious about, is what exactly makes bogys so tough? I haven't had the chance to check them out yet, but they seem to be ghost-type creatures. If that's the case, then keeping them silenced should allow a decent group of appropriate level (i.e. 18) to defeat one. Are they just too high level? Too magic resistant? Too physically resistant?

I'm unwilling to accept that the Mhaura quest is simply intended to be done at a higher level than the Selbina quest, there has to be some strategy for fighting bogys. If not, maybe their difficulty should be tweaked.

Bogys have alot of HP and have high defense. One of their attacks curses anyone in range, which lowers their HP, MP, and makes them run very slowly. It can last up to 30 minutes if not cured, and I forgot what level Whm can use Curse-na.

Curse? That certainly explains it. Cursena being level 29...hmm. I'm going to have to check these things out myself, but I'm definitely seeing why so many people would choose the Selbina quest.

You neglected to mention that Bogys will do approximately 90-100 damage a hit on a level 18 character, which basically means you're dead in 3-4 hits.

I lucked out on this quest in Selbina.

I got the Damselfly Worm, Magicked Skull and Crab Apron in a spate of 2 hours of RL play. Cast lots were 950+ each time. Go me ...

So, now what the hell am I suppose to do? I talked to the dude and sub job is enabled. Does that mean I need to decide on anything NOW? What if I want to be a Paladin? Altho I suppose for that question, I should look in the Job Forum >.>

I got my skull in the Gusgen mines. A party with some of my friends in it (who all had the skull already) took me there and we killed ghouls and i got a skull in about 15 mins... but i had been on for a few days before that looking on the beach for ghouls with a PT... HOPING to get the skull...

The crab apron was easy to get and the damselfly worm wasnt too hard either... it just took me a while to get it.

Gusgen usually gives good exp though too, so my 2 days spent there got me 2 levels. Skulls aren't THAT hard to get, as long as there's someone smart in the party. In Gusgen, as long as you have a white mage, just sit in a spot and let someone lure ghouls. Have white mage cure and all that, then while the lurer is out getting another guy, white mage can heal their mp up. You could get a few ghouls every 5 minutes, depending on how fast you kill them.

I did my sub-job quests long ago in Mhaura. Back then there was less competition and Bogies pop more often than ghouls, plus there were many players camping in Mhaura and Buburimu back then.

Bogies main strength is high HP, extremely high magic defense, HP suck and curse spells. There are low chances of a lv18 party to win it, but if you have enuff contacts around, you can form an alliance. The bloody coat drops at a fairly higher rate than the skull.
