Is every FFXI community dead?

I recently came back to FFXI after about 2 years off, with a different goal in mind. So far, I am loving the changes I see. It really satisfies my desire to actually complete objectives, while being able to play casually. But I am looking for a bit more. I can't just jump into end game, but I would like to get there. My main problem is community support. I cannot find 1 active web site, including this one. Just like the dozen or so other sites that were once boombing with life, it is complete death with the exception of forum topics "Returning player". Just a few ppl popping in to ask others what they need to do in order to enjoy their gameplay... This will be what ends FFXI for me.

What I want this time around is a strong, small, close group of acquaintances. A place where we can do end game, but the overall goal is much more than a schedule of events. However, I am not able to search for one because everything is dead, including the POL site. I can't believe the game even has servers left to play on from what I can find in forums. Shouting isn't going to help, what I am looking for will basically require a website because the group I want in will have to take applications and such to ensure only the highest quality of characters are allowed to join. Alla, KI, KV, BG, clopedia, FFXIAH, recipe, etc are not helpful in the least when it comes to social interaction. Please tell me there is an active site out there somewhere, even if it is small, that will allow the few that are on to socially interact. Hopefully I just overlooked it. Doubtfully as the hours of googling results in the same, once mighty, but hollow sites. I'm on Fenrir, but willing to transfer.

There's a Linkshell here that plays on Valefor that would love to have new members I think. I'm sure one of them will notice this and give you more info.

The game is ten years old, these forums are active, just not with FFXi discussion save for the odd news bit. Interest is in decline, many have moved on to other MMOs or away from them. We just talk about other stuff more now.

I quit two and a half years ago, but there are plenty still here to help. Just don't expect robust discussion of FFXI, as there just isn't a lot of mystery for us there now. You're free to ask questions, though.

Do be fair though... most sites that previously had a robust discussion about FFxi news and happenings are dwindling. This one barely covers anything even remotely related to XI anymore. If the name wasn't known, I'd say this site needs a name change. Like:

Memories of Vanadiel
or
Dreams in Eorza
or
Vanadiel Elderly Retirement Center.

No fair! That was taken out of context. Well, let me take this opportunity to clarify myself. What I meant was, I can spend hours, even visit pass communities(sites) that were once full of FFXI conversations. Now, even active sites, like this one, seem to have all but discontinued the FFXI portion of their community. Basically I'm trying to say that I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to be apart of an active conversation with a decent person that is actually related to the FFXI gameplay itself.

The game is ten years old, these forums are active, just not with FFXi discussion save for the odd news bit. Interest is in decline, many have moved on to other MMOs or away from them. We just talk about other stuff more now.

Most of it is simply the age of the game, but problem has been made worse by SE's handling of the game itself. Content additions are now fairly slow and half-assed compared to the full and proper expansions they used to have back in the game's prime. They've got a skeleton crew manning the game and it shows.

I know. Such a familar reply to FFXI threads, lol. Unfortunately it's hard to establish a personality via text. Rather than start screaming match, which was also very common to see, I decided to over explain in hopes of a recant or, better yet, another reply revealing a reasonable person.

Lol I am now recalling the general populous' disgust with SE and their definition of "Customer support". Damn them for their remarkable game mechanics! At least, that's my opinion, and pretty much the only reason I play. I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm not going to find what I'm looking for, at least not in this game.... Too bad.

Heck I still remember back when Feba was just a kid running around Aht Urgan wearing a teddy bear costume and Murphie wasn't as bitter, and TGM, Neighbortaru, Jei and PaiPai were still playing the game. Then there's all the guys I played XI with once upon a time on the Knights of Baron LS (Fenrir) and that are now gone from my life. So all I have left are the memories and the dozens of pills I have to ingest a day, along with the certainty of my death approaching faster and faster.

Well, I think that the people who are still really truckin' in FFxi are more interested in farming/finishing the new content than keeping the interwebs up to date. It's been so much random stuff shoved into FFxi in the last couple of years, it's an incredible feat to fully get what you want out of it - let alone have a life outside of a game. After Abyssea landed it was slow going for all the usually reliable info sites to keep up. Then FFxiv's initial launch side-tracked and then disappointed some players. Seems that those people who were typically reliable to troll the official Squeeenix releases and repost them just aren't that interested anymore.

I'm on a hiatus... and, tbh, it's a daunting thought coming back even after several months of a break.
