Re: Thinking of playing XI again, but it's been a long time....

Hey thanks for all the information. I'm sure I'll find it useful. The reason I brought up that I'm in Canada is because the original site you linked to is Amazon.com, and they won't process an order from a Canadian address. We have to use Amazon.ca and they don't have the same downloadable version listed on their site. I plan to play on a laptop with keyboard/mouse or a ps3 controller if it's easy to set up. Can you use it without buying the bluetooth dongle from deal extreme? I'm ok being wired in since the laptop is sitting on my lap anyway.

Also, maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but when you're a returning customer, can you still get the first month free, or do you have to be on a new account to do that? I already have a POL ID, which has been transferred to a S-E account. I already have 3 characters sitting on cancelled content ID's. I will reactivate them as soon as I can get into the game launcher.

What server are you on geogolem?

Are you sure thats the case? I have purchased Kindle books from amazon.com in the past and successfully bought 2 gift certificates with my Canadian address/credit card last week. I'm hoping to grab FF XIV from there when I eventually upgrade my video card!

They even have a shipping policy for Canada: Amazon.com Help: Canada

but you wouldn't need to worry about shipping for digital (downloadable) content. The exchange rate is almost $1CAD ~ $1US.

Yes, I had no problems getting the PS3 dualshock 3 to work via usb with the motioninjoy drivers. Bluetooth was a little more complicated but once I got the right dongle it was just as simple. The only real difficulty I had was reversing the right analog stick direction in the FF XI gamepad configuration and that wasn't even really hard once I figured out where to do it.

Here is a link to the download for motioninjoy: MotioninJoy | Playstation 3|Xbox 360|Dualshock 3|Sixaxis|Game|Driver|

One warning I will provide: If you have integrated bluetooth on your machine and/or use existing bluetooth devices do not overwrite your existing bluetooth drivers with the ones in the motioninjoy application. (there is a button to do this). If you plan on using the controller via USB just make sure you only install the USB driver. If you have a compatible bluetooth adapter or buy the one I suggested from dealextreme you still don't need to overwrite the bluetooth drivers as the default Windows drivers will work fine and you can just plug the controller in and click "pair" and it will work. If the bluetooth isn't working and it asks you to overwrite drivers don't bother risking it. I tried it and had to go to the truble of rolling back etc because it broke my other bluetooth functionality. Once I bought that cheap dongle from dealextreme, I just plugged it in, let windows auto-install its default drivers and then motioninjoy auto detected it and all I had to do was click pair and I was set. After that it basically worked just as good as it did with my original PS3.... powering off if idle and repairing to my PC when I press the Playstation button etc. The 4 light indicators on the controller would indicate the remaining battery life.

I was on Alexander, which has merged with Shiva so I should be on shiva when I return.

I'm not absolutely certain about the amazon thing. I've never tried to purchase anything digital from them before, but when I went to the link you gave me, there was a notice about non-US billing addresses not being eligible for the purchase.

I'm thinking about using my amazon store credit to buy this: Amazon.com: Mass Effect Dual Pack [Download]: Video Games

That looks like a pretty good deal and I missed the Steam deals in the past.

I have definitely bought kindle books in the past without problem but I have yet to purchase a game or software package. It will be interesting to see if it works.

Its a good time too, because its nearing the end of the month and I still have more than 50 GB left for bandwidth usage this month.

I actually just did it. I bought both mass effect games as per that link I posted. I bought 2 gift cards for amazon.com a week ago valued at $20using my canadian credit card. Went to purchase the game I wanted. It asks you for your credit card and billing address to verify your identity. I just changed my billing address to the address of the Boston Library and it went through no problem. I grabbed the license keys for both games and could proceed to download them from amazon but I'm just going to activate/download on origin instead.

Not really sure. Depends on how many of my old friends are still around from when I used to play. If the answer is none, then I have no ties to Shiva lol. Then I would need someone to get me a worldpass, because I think S-E charges $25 to change.

I got my "cd keys" from steam finally, and went to the square enix account site to register them. When I opened up services on my old POL account, and tried to add the key for abyssea, etc it said I couldn't and that I'd have to start a new POL account. So I did, but then I realized it had the full 20 character slots, and my characters were nowhere to be found.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd like to reactivate my old characters from when I played on PS2, but I purchased a brand new game, so now I'm not sure if it's possible. I don't have any of my old info from the game itself like the registration codes from FFXI, RoZ, CoP and ToAU. Of course I didn't think I'd need them where I was getting everything in one pack with the one I just bought.

              Suggestions? Ideas?

There is a button on the SE account site to register new codes onto an existing account. To reactivate your old characters, you will need your POL account and password. Your old account is the one you should be registering with SE and then adding the new info to it. Also, a worldpass won't help you get around the $25 if you want to keep your old characters.

Ok thanks for the heads up on the world pass. As I logged into POL I noticed one of my old buddies was showing as online, so it's not a total loss lol.

I spoke to someone at SE support, and he was very helpful. He put in a ticket to get the new content usable on my old account. I'm able to log in with my reactivated characters with the content I used to have (up to ToAU) right now, so that's cool. But first I need to sit through a potentially mind numbing update. 22759 files lol.

Again, where I'm a PC noob, can anyone give me advice on how to change the graphics/display settings? I'm running a Nvidia 525M card in a Dell laptop, Intel I-7 @ 2.20 with 8MB ram. I figure I should be able to put it on max settings without too much trouble. Anything else I should consider? Where to get windower program maybe? Although my POL update is currently running in windowed mode... maybe that will switch to full screen when the game actually starts.

I personally haven't had success with the windower program... It seems to crash when I try... Maybe someone else can provide us with more info or advice regarding that.

If you bought the game through Steam there should be an FF XI Configuration utility *separate* from the game. It should prompt you if you want to load that when you try to load the game from Steam or if you right click on the FF XI entry in your Steam Library list. From there you can select the resolution and graphics settings you want to use. Also if you are using a widescreen monitor you'll want to change the aspect ratio in game under the config entry in the options menu.

Sweet thanks. I heard that you can change the settings in game too. I'll mess around with it and see what happens. At the rate this download is going it will be a long time before I can play it. Definitely not today.... tomorrow after work maybe.

Yup, yesterday was maintenance day. Took about 8 hours to download all the files (my internet isn't that fast). I got it up and running today though. Had a hell of a time configuring the controller the way I wanted. The L2 and R2 on the DS3 controller being on the same axis basically make it impossible to have both active as digital buttons in game, so I had to assign my macros to L1 and R1, use L2 for auto run toggle, and switch up a few others to compensate. Works great now, and with the in game options to size your screen to fit your aspect ratio it looks incredible at my native desktop resolution.

I must say I'm so overwhelmed and I havent even done anything yet. I last logged out 5 years ago as a 50 THF in Jeuno, and I logged in today and felt like a complete noob. My gear is all over the place between storage/mog safe/mule, etc. I guess I need to get to Windurst to get some gear, then figure out what to do. Where do I start? haha. I still have ToUA missions to do, and once S-E fixes up my account, I'll have full access to WotG, Abyssea, etc.

I just select the second option in motioninjoy for PS2 Controller. This one enables both analog sticks but treats the L2/R2 triggers as digital triggers instead of analog.. After experimenting that is the optimal one for me. Once I had that set all I had to do was reverse the axis of the right analog stick in the FF XI Config utility.

Anyway, just FYI... Do whatever works for you!

Holy crap I'm overwhelmed. I suppose I can't blame anyone but myself for missing out on 5 years worth of updates, but it's unbelievable what they've done with this game (aside from easy-mode). I wonder if anyone can give me some guidance just so I can get going in the right direction.

Here's my situation. Got a 75 RDM, 75 BST, 50 THF, and a lot of jobs at 37-42. I played right up to just before the release of WotG, but I didn't complete most of the ToaU missions. I have RotZ and CoP complete, as well as Rank 10 Windurst. Beyond that, not much to say. Where do I begin? I leveled BLU the last couple of nights and got it from 16-33 (those Gusgen page burn parties are retarded- some people don't even show up with gear - but they are fast if you stay for a while).

So some of the issues I've had have been travelling - I must be missing something because I've had to take chocobos a fair bit, and man are they slow. Any suggestions on improving my travel time? I know about warp to home, then OP warp. Any other suggestions?

I guess if you were in my shoes, what would your first goal be? I desperately need some guidance.
                              Thanks guys.

Get started on the Abyssea quest line right away. You'll need to let stones build up(there's a time limit on Abyssea zones, stones = time), but more importantly there are some new maws that you can warp to, which will cut down on your travel time.
