  • Information sites (2012)

After coming back just this week I noticed many of the old player resources are pretty much dead. So I'd like to create an updated list of current (and safe) resources for old players returning to the game.

I'm guessing FFXIAH hasn't changed much, but FFXIclopedia is like a desert now, probably due to all the nonsense about not posting info before it goes live (very bad move I think) but I have no idea what other good sites are currently out there.

So... can you guys post what sites are you using nowadays?

I'll update the OP as a proper list once there are enough sites compiled. Thanks.

    Re: Information sites (2012)

I use the gamerescape wiki ( Main Page - Gamer Escape's Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more ) or FFXIclopedia mainly. If I can't find the information there, the BGwiki is usually better than those two (old habits just die hard). If not there, any number of forums you can comb through, and last I just ask on here.

      Re: Information sites (2012)

If I were to return..... Is there any updated info on good solo sites seeing as how parties have all but died at low levels, and soloing fits any schedule?

      Yay, Ty for this Eohmer~

        1. Solo with what job? I guess it doesn't really matter as long as you can go /dnc or /nin (if you are whm or rdm or dnc main).

        2. Low level parties haven't died per se, they've just changed, and its actually easier for people that don't have a lot of time. Just camp one of the popular dungeons (Gusgen, Crawlers' Nest, Bost{tab}) and shout for an invite when you are ready and then leave when you are done. Most of the time there is an alliance of some kind so they won't generally miss one person.

I was wanting to solo Drg, (and I don't have dnc yet, but it does sound like it would be a really helpful job so... yeah, nor do I have sch, I left before they were added) and if there are alliances that generally do well in the leveling areas, that sounds great.

Are the new level cap breaks hard? I think I did the first one after 75 when I came back for a couple weeks last year. (Also, aren't some people generous and let you basically just power level in aby? XD)

Edit: also, when are those drg boosts going to be implemented, are they already? =)

DRG can probably solo as /whm. DRG boosts will be next update it looks like, dunno when that is though. The only remotely difficult limit break is the 95-99 one.

                BGWiki is also decent.

BG Wiki and FFXIclopedia will cover most stuff that you can't glean from FFXIAH. I'd leave GamerEscape to rot personally, since it did the community a grave disservice by dividing the wiki userbase the way it did.

Anything else you can't get from those three or general forum browsing can usually be found by harassing BG's Random Question Thread.

It's not hard, but some parts (speaking about the cure potency Staff) can be slow without help. You can hold up to 5 (or did they change that to 10?) at a time. However, once you start along a certain path and get to a certain point, then you either have to finish or drop it and start over.

                      Re: Information sites (2012)

"GamerEscape" isn't just Ganiman, its also PFA, LBR and where some of old ZAM moderators just do things now as those things became less needed. They consolidated after traffic grinded to a halt in their sites and communities.

Its pretty much the same way with BG - which was unfortunately a few seeds of wisdom trying to grow out of what became a tremendous heap of shit. What's left is a knowledge base that still dossn't see as many updates and FFXIclopedia still does.

My problem - and its really my only problem with GamerEscape - is that its really a home for FFXI and FFVIV players that tries to be something more general for gaming, but only makes contrived efforts to do so. I recall advocating for that direction when things started looking bleak for LBR, but you can't expect one person to carry that concept and most of them are still too into FFXI and XIV to put any heart into that.

Which is puzzling to me because FFXI and FFXIV not longer update enough to take away from building a stronger community around general gaming discussion. Then again, you have people like me that are more attracted to the newsblogs for that sort of thing. I like FusionX, but he does too many SE fanboy editorials. Theorycrafting about what a Kingdom Hearts MMO would be like is best left for a personal blog, not the front page.

From what I've seen BG is still fairly on top of new info. Moreso than FFXIclopedia from what I have observed, so I wouldn't say BG "doesn't see many updates". It's got problems, sure, but it's not like the BG wiki is filled with tumbleweeds.

Well BG's focus was always mainly endgame and ... what else is there right now? Other sites took a more general look at FFXI and general stuff is where FFXI totally fell off the face of the earth.

finally, how many of the missions are soloable? (if I were to get my whm or drg to 90+)

Nation missions are all soloable as a melee (or melee WHM) up until, and possibly including, the last couple. Zilart is soloable until Ark Angels by most people, and some can solo that. CoP is soloable until the airship fight, at least, and possibly the pots and maybe the whole thing at this point. ToAU is probably soloable (havent done it all) until close to the end. And WotG is soloable by a pet job I think, though drg and whm might need some help. WHM will need help dealing damage unless you are a good melee WHM (I am not).
