Way back when, I used to play FFXI alot... I'm talking 14 hours, DAILY.

Haven't played for a few years now but would love to go back down
memory lane.

I see they have taken the free trial offer down.

Does that mean the buddy passes are also no longer available?

If there not, where is the best place to grab one?

He meant the completely free 15 day (iirc) base game you can dl and play for free. At this point, just grab the game for 20 bucks on amazon or steam. It's cheap enough.

Or see if someone has a guest pass (they come with the collections copies ppl buy) they're willing to share.

If it was that price, I would've considered buying it.

But in the UK it's like £17. Which is $27-30... bit too much
to test out a game, I think anyway.

The game is screaming me back, but from what I've heared
it's a bit of a risk to plunk $30 without trying first.

What have you heard? That it is considerably easier to level right now? That a lot more content is pretty soloable? I can see how that would be a deterrent.

Even with the "solo friendly" tweaks levelling solo still goes at a glacial pace compared to back when it was possible to party from level 10 up to 75, namely when there was still a healthy playerbase and prior to the Abyssea leech mindset.

But thankfully with GoV you needn't actually level solo. You can basically catch an alliance invite from level 10-90.

GoV is Grounds of Valor. You select a page that has a goal of mobs to kill. After completion it gives you an XP bonus. An alliance is more than one party cooperating.
